In which John Green teaches you about the presidency of Andrew Jackson So how did a president with astoundingly bad fiscal policies end up on the $20 bill? That's a question we can't answer, but we can tell you how Jackson got to be president, and how he changed the country when he got the job. Jackson's election was more democratic than any previous presidential election. More people were able to vote, and they picked a doozie. Jackson was a well-known war hero, and he was elected over his longtime political enemy, John Quincy Adams. Once Jackson was in office, he did more to expand executive power than any of the previous occupants of the White House. He used armed troops to collect taxes, refused to enforce legislation and supreme court legislation, and hired and fired his staff based on support in elections. He was also the first president to regularly wield the presidential veto as a political tool. Was he a good president? Watch this video and draw your own conclusions.

"The problem started, as so many problems do, in Missouri" is a quote that is extremely relevant for what is going on right now.

Andrew Jackson's relation's with Native American's is also interesting. Jackson and Rachel never had children. But they three adopted children. One was Rachel's nephew, the other two were orphaned Native American children. He also served as the guardian of 8 other children after their father died.
Say what you want about his politics. But damn he had one depressing personal life. He lost his entire family before the age of 14. He was also a bad ass. He got into a duel with Charles Dickinson (Not the writer) after he wrote a paper that attacked his wife. He let Dickinson shoot first. He got his inches away from his heart. He then shot Dickinson fatally. So yeah, Fucking badass.

Jackson called Adams a murderer, not the other way around. Background: Adams claimed that Jackson's wife was married to two men at the same time, using this as mud to insult Jackson in an action known as mudslinging (insulting political rivals). She had forgotten to sign the last page of her divorce document before she married Jackson. It was all settled, but after Jackson's election, before his inauguration, she died from a heart attack. Jackson claims that the stress fro the election and Adams insults killed her, but she did have a pre-existing heart condition. The end.

Britain didn't invade the Falklands, they defended it. Argentina invaded the Falklands. So the Monroe doctrine wasn't actually violated.

Key Points:

In the Election of 1828 Andrew Jackson, nicknamed "Old Hickory" because he was though to be stronger than a hickory tree, proved victorious over his previous competitor ( to which he lost in the Election of 1824), John Quincy Adams (yes, he is the son of John Adams, 2nd president). The year of his election, the Tariff of 1828 was passed by Congress. President Jackson supported this, however South Carolina especially did not. They threatened with the use of nullification but were forced to undergo the tariff, through none other than President Jackson himself. Anyways, Jackson used intolerable measures to drive Native Americans (specifically Cherokke, Choctaw, Creek, Chickasaw, Seminole tribes) out of their lands. As  a result, he was hated by Native Americans, giving the despicable president the nickname "Sharp Knife".

I love how after every episode John becomes less and less enthusiastic during the description of the mystery document game.

Hey! Just a suggestion, but you guys should really do a segment on Economics. American economy is so complex and hard to understand. I would really love it if you guys would explain it!

Thank you
From a 16 year old girl eager to learn : )
