When I was like six year old I was in Berlin for the first time. The Hauptbahnhof is so epic you couldn't get me out of there

on both the upper and lower level you'll see high-speed and regional express trains.

Just an absolutely fantastic station, yes!

It's like somebody decided to build a galleria and run train lines through it!

great station. I still remember the time I had to change from the s-bahn to a train on the lower levels with only a minute to spare (I was late). It's a miracle I didn't break my heels the way I sprinted down all those escalators. But I did catch my train (it was also late)

I went to this station a few times on a school trip and the design has always stuck with me, even when I couldn’t remember where it was I just remembered the multiple levels of platforms. I really need to go back to berlin again

So for me as a Berliner, the station is worth seeing every time. OK, the elevators from the north-south direction up to the east-west direction (Stadtbahn) are too slow. However, extensive construction work will soon begin. The "holes" on the long-distance platforms of the light rail are to be closed. Additional points will also be installed so that trains can also end at the main station. This is currently only possible in the "basement". Oh yes, some taxi drivers in Berlin call the Berlin Central Station the "Mehdornium", Hartmut Mehdorn was the name of the head of the railway who had decided on the construction of the station. Greeetings from Berlin/ Germany. Sven

All nice and dandy, except there's just one U-Bahn line and just the Stadtbahn (East-West trunk of the S-Bahn) linking up with it, apart from a few tram and bus lines. As epic as it looks, they built it first in the middle of nowhere and THEN started to scratch their heads and muse, "Hmmm, maybe we should connect it to public transport." I'm exaggerating of course, but not too much.

It's a nice station, but DB has recently announced they need to fix quite a lot of issues, mainly about capacity:

The designers seriously underestimated the growing passenger numbers. Especially the upper platforms are too narrow and have holes in them that reduce the width further.

Also the number of lifts would be doubled to meet demand, but this would be almost impossible

@RMTransit, Thank you--excellent educational material for U.S.A. public schools.

If you depart on a train from the lower level, go to Gesundbrunnen, take the Ringbahn to Westkreuz and change onto a train on the Stadtbahn, you can make it to the upper level even before one of those slowest lifts of Germany has made the journey ;)

When I was there no one knew where any of the trains were going. Not even the people working there.

I'm not from Germany nor do I usually go to train stations, but that station looked a lot like a place I used to dream about, specially when I was younger.

Reminds me of Príncipe Pío station, in Madrid, with suburban rail flying above the metro in an old station building with a theater and a mall

The original plan even included a MagLev station. Unfortunately the Transrapid project was scrapped, so that didn't happen.
