This is what I did. It worked after about 2 weeks of diligent and consistent training. I wrapped the back and sides of my sofa with double sided tape. I bought a tall (at least 30"), sisal scratching post that is very stable. It must be the kind that won't topple over if your cat leaps on it or scratches it savagely. Invest in it, your cat will eventually use it and stop using the sofa. After wrapping the sofa with double sided tape, I sprinkled catnip on top of the scratching post to lure my cat to it. I also used a laser pointer, which he loves to chase, and ran it up and down the post. He came to the realization that the post was his to scratch and beat up, while the sofa was off limits.

I still keep the tape on the sofa in case my cat forgets (it's been a month now since he stopped using the sofa), but he is now always using his scratching post and he gets a treat and "good boy!" after using it. I'll probably remove the tape after another month or so.

Yes, I have scratching posts all over the house!!! Vertical, horizontal, ramp type and a few cat trees. Some are sisal, some are carpeted, and some are the cardboard kind. I haven't tried a wood one yet. I figure if I have at least one of every type, everyone can find something they like to scratch on, so they have NO excuse, and I have explained that to them!!! LOL. I also keep their nails trimmed!! Most of them don't mind. I only have one that absolutely hates it and fights me every time!! And he's the oldest (18 years). You would think he would have figured out by now that I'm not going to hurt him by doing this!! This was a really great informative video. I'll bet a lot of people didn't know about some of these methods. 😸

This is so useful!! I'm planning
on getting a kitten soon, and
I for sure do not want my
furniture look like a giant
scratching post.

I've read claw covers can be a pain for both human and cat and even get stuck on there, but I'm glad you said that declawing is terrible.

Yup, learn some things I didn't know. Knew some things already.
Great to fill in gaps in knowledge, and nice feeling that I was doing allot of things right.
Thank you so much for taking the time to teach even old timers
something new. Love it! 💖

A claw clipping show, hopefully featuring the beautiful Maggie would be a great idea.
I found that aluminium foil stopped my crazy scratcher in her tracks, after she had destroyed the fabric cover over 2 $1200 speakers.
I am not sure why it works but it is an alternative anti-scratch method.

My cat preferred only 1 of the 10 000 scratching posts in the house (that is now discontinued!!) As it is too frayed, she started honing in on the furniture, and I just can't get her to stop...😢. Tried all but the spray bottle and feliway crossed!!

Cats get away with so much stuff. "I paid a lot of money for that new couch Fluffy so leave it alone you have your scratching post." Fluffy says." Thanks for the new couch for me to scratch on 😁."

I am allergic go cats. In an attempt to make me leave my husband brought home 2 cats. I have a chihuahua. She chases them. I have had to cover all my furniture. So far they have ruined a 2000$ dining set and are working on the leather sofa. Im particularly interested in the spikey vinyl mat. Headed to Lowes today😂😂😂😂

My cat Tiger-J has a scratching post. I add catnip to it, and I say "Good boy" whenever he uses it.

One method I used was canned air, the type for blowing dust from electronics. When my cat starts to scratch the furniture and because I may be in another room it startles the cat but because kitty doesn't know it was me doing this he just though it was because he was scratching the wrong item.

8:47 "extra stubborn cats" I've had many cats over my life and they can all be qualified as extra stubborn. Like they say when something is hard to do its like "herding cats" LOL
