Nasi Goreng | Indonesian Fried Rice | Fried Rice Friday #3

For this third instalment of Fried Rice Fridays we're headed to Indonesia. Nasi goreng literally just means 'fried rice' in Bahasa and the key to this dish is the aromatic "rempah" made from eschallots, garlic, chilli and shrimp paste. It can be as simple as rice fried with the rempah and topped with a fried egg, or you can add other ingredients to it like I have here, with chicken, prawns and green beans.

Nasi goreng, warung, udang kerupuk.... thanks for taking the time to learn how to pronounce your Indonesian words correctly! Really appreciate the attention to detail!

Kepada kawanku di Indonesia yang terhormat... So many Australians have visited Indonesia and enjoyed your food. We think of ‘nasi goreng’ and ‘sate ayam degan saus kacang’ (which we call “chicken satay”) as almost part of the food of our diverse country too. So please be proud. Terima kasih atas makanan anda yang lezat!

I love how you actually mentioned COLD rice because this tiny detail is often overlooked in many recipes. In Indonesia we use day-old rice (leftovers) which soaks the flavours better and prevents it from steaming during frying which could create a mushy texture.

the great thing about nasi goreng is there is no exact recipe. you can add whatever you want. its a very versatile food. good job adam, really a nice video!

Hi, Adam! I'm from Suriname. It's a country in South America, but there are a lot of Indonesian immigrants here and I can tell you that this was spot on! This is almost exactly the same way I make my Nasi Goreng, but sometimes we just prepare a sort of omelette and slice it in ribbons to make it appear as egg noodles or stir the eggs through the fried rice (they do the egg noodles mostly in Warungs or big parties. Stirring the eggs through the rice is mostly for homemade Nasi Goreng). This channel is very underrated and underappreciated. I love the content and I hope you get more views and subscribers! 😁

Isn't it funny how many Indonesians view this video, not so much as to learn but kind of give their stamp of approval 😄.

Appreciate how you took time to pronounce Indonesian words correctly, thank you.
I’m from Java, in here we add bean sprouts and bit of noodles, and uses slices of fried chicken and boiled egg to enhance the flavor.

really impressed with your attention to details like frying the egg with plenty of oil to get the puffiness. This just shows how much time you put into your work and research on local foods around the world. Hats off to you Adam!

When I see Kecap Manis and shallot on the table I knew right away this is authentic Indonesian Nasi Goreng. 🙂

I love how you fry the eggs. Nasi Goreng especially the street version of Nasi Gorengs are topped with fried eggs like this and we Indonesians called it Telur Mata Sapi. It is similar to sunny side-ups albeit fried and submerged with more oil. Very authentic I would say, Uncle Roger will definitely approve haha

and btw, Indonesians mostly call it Kerupuk Udang instead of Udang Kerupuk, but still very nice effort and I appreciate it

Indonesians are so much more polite and accepting than Italians. Just read the comments on this video, and compare them with someone making an Italian dish.

Hi, Adam! i love it when you highlighting Nasi Goreng on your channel. Usually we pre cook the "rempah" or spice mix in advance. And for the best result usually i added the sauteed rempah 1-2 mins after you put your jasmine rice, thats the best timing to put flavor into your rice, and drizzle the Kecap Manis on the side of your wok not on the rice to make the Kecap more caramelized. Cheers from Indonesia

This (and bami goereng) are also basically the national dishes of the Netherlands. Ridiculously popular, everybody makes them at home. They sell "kits" (portioned out veggie mix, with ready made seasoning in the form of paste of powder, kethup manis in a little sachet), and you just pick it up in any store, and throw it together with rice and chicken when you get home from work.

I love your videos. The peaceful vibe and cinematography is great. I live in Thailand and like to compare our variations on your dishes.

Wow, jenis nasi goreng favoritku. Warnanya coklat gelap kecap manis, nasi yang tidak terlalu pera. Dan yang pasti, resep andalan nasi goreng kampung itu cukuplah lombok, bawang merah, bawang putih, terasi, garam. Yosh!
