In the past during virus investigations we've used some of their findings and software and it's wild to see after all their controversies they've finally been banned in the United States. Why? Kaspersky has like 20 years of community goodwill behind it, its considered a pillar of the cybersecurity community as far as I know and some people are saying that the software is now able to detect US rootkits on systems which is why they want to ban it.

I mean no joke, Kaspersky is currently the best antivirus on the market in terms of malware detection. I remember when the Minecraft mods got malware injected in them, Kaspersky was the only engine on virustotal that detected it the day it became public

Kaspersky at one point had the only tool that would remove a specific nasty virus one of my coworkers downloaded and infected his computer. It turned out to be a free tool that we put on a boot stick and used to fix the problem. I'm certain other tools came out later to fix the same problem but we wanted it cleaned fast.

From my understanding there wasn't any hackers involved in the incident with the contractor's PC. What happened was it was identified by Kaspersky AV as malware, uploaded to their server, and one of the lead guys saw it and told his people to delete the uploaded software. But because this was a huge security bungle the US government freaked tf out (as they should?) and banned all their employees from ever using non-US AV's. Kaspersky in its history has never shown any malevolent intent and has benefited the cybersecurity community at large. I think this is simply the US ramping pressure on Russia and also covering their bases just in case.
