The BEST Season of SpongeBob SquarePants (Part 1)

SpongeBob SquarePants is a show that will always hold a special place in my childhood memories. SpongeBob as a whole is a series that is very unique and took a very different approach to humor that combined comedy with the show's creator, Stephen Hillenburg's knowledge of undersea life. It's no secret that over time, the quality of episodes took a very steep decline, but that doesn't dismiss the legacy that the show built over the years. In my opinion, the early seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants are by far the best, but there's just something about season 1 that really stands out among the other quality seasons. That's why today, on our nostalgic walk down memory lane, we are going to dive down to Bikini Bottom and dissect season 1 of SpongeBob SquarePants to relive some childhood memories and remember what made it so special.

It wasn’t until recently that I realized the customer in Pizza Delivery told SpongeBob “didn’t you ever once think of the customer?” when SpongeBob went through all that trouble, for the customer. That hit hard.

Spongebob was made to be hand drawn. The way he squashes and stretches and never quite comes back to look the same is just delightful to look at. I also like Season 1 for the bigger emphasis on the fake nature documentary kind of vibe. Like peeking into a wonderful world like a scuba diver would. Maybe this was one of the reasons I became a scuba diver myself!

The hawaiian themes in Spongebob always hit me different with warm and nostalgic feelings. Those themes crawled deep into my brain.

I was almost 40 when SpongeBob premiered and have never lost my love for the early seasons or even up to 8, but the first 4 will always be the most rewatched episodes. Funny is funny. It's Wombo.

I’ve always loved that old cel animation and watercolor look of the first season. I think it makes it extra nostalgic!

The other thing I love about pizza delivery is that it’s the first time we see Squidward really stand up for Spongebob. It would have been easy to make Squidward heartless and conceited, but stuff like this is what made him such a lovable character in the end.

Everyone will always say that the band episode is their favorite, and for me it's my second favorite. My favorite episode is the pizza delivery episode. I just love how the pizza episode encapsulates life as a food service worker, the guy who tries really hard to do a good job ends up getting screamed at for something out of their control. And I just enjoyed how Squidward sees this situation and shoves the pizza in the guy's face, even Squidward likes bullying and teasing Spongebob normally but Squidward saw how hard Spongebob worked to get the pizza delivered to the guy and couldn't stand seeing Spongebob get broken down like that. I mean yeah if I was the customer I'd be mad too if my drink wasn't delivered but I wouldn't mind as long as I wasn't charged for it.

After watching this video, it amazes just how many moments from these episodes are still relevant. From memes, TikTok audios, or random conversations with people, it proves how solid the first season is. And WE'RE NOT EVEN DONE WITH THE ENTIRE SEASON!

I was 11 years old when they started advertising this show and I distinctly remember thinking “That show looks stupid”. It was my favorite show after one episode. Still is, 23 years later.

The art style of the title cards and throughout the series is Tiki, basically a 1950s era take on what was called "Polynesian" aesthetic even if it had little to do with the actual people groups.
You also see it from the music in the series which has a lot of slide guitar and other instruments associated with that aesthetic.

Can we all agree that season 1 Spongebob had a crush on Sandy? The way he acts around her, like getting jealous over the attention she was giving Larry, trying to get the best advice he could to give her a good first impression, doing things at his expense to make her laugh, its all there honestly.

38:15 the next scene after shows Patrick saying to SpongeBob “I don’t think squidward likes us”. This is a really important detail lost in the later seasons because it shows that Patrick understands squidwards tone of voice and can tell that squidward doesn’t want to join in, really wish they made Patrick semi smarter like this
