CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Guido (Roberto Benigni) and Joshua (Giorgio Cantarini) send Dora (Nicoletta Braschi) a message of hope over the concentration camp's PA system.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this WW II tragicomedy, famed Italian funnyman Roberto Benigni (The Monster) portrays Guido, who moves during the '30s from the country to a Tuscan town, where he is entranced by schoolteacher Dora (Nicoletta Braschi, Benigni's real-life wife). Dora likes Guido, but she remains faithful to her pompous fiancé, so Guido has an uphill struggle. Meanwhile, anti-Semitic attitudes lead to attacks against Guido's Jewish uncle (Giustino Durano). Leaping ahead to five years later, during WW II, Guido and Dora are married and have a son Giosue (Giorgio Cantarini). After they are imprisoned in a concentration camp, Guido goes to elaborate lengths to keep his son from understanding the truth of their situation. He tells the boy that they are competing with others to win an armored tank -- so everything from food shortages to tattoos is explained as necessary for participation in the contest.

This movie is the essence of humanity. Even in the darkest moments Guido still did anything he could for those he loved.

Oh my God, this is so beautiful. Such an amazing movie. And the passion in their words is the best part...like when the boy says "Mama!" it is the sweetest sound. The beauty and emotion in this leaves me breathless. <3

Earlier in the film, she is told that all children and older people are gassed in the camps. The women were sorting through the pile of clothes that belonged to the victims who were gassed. So to hear her son’s voice when she thought that he might be dead must have really blessed her.

btw to anybody saying that the humor in the movie/in guido's character takes away from the seriousness, i firmly believe that it was put there to make it sadder. you empathize with guido *because* he's so silly and optimistic and just kind of a goofball. it shows you that the holocaust victims were real people. i'm sure tons of them in real life really had just used humor to win over a girl and start a family, and then they had to go to a concentration camp. it's meant to make guido more human.

I think the thing that makes me cry and smile the most is the fact that yes he's a silly, funny guy but he is a good guy, a good father, and a good husband. The way he goes out of his way to leave a message to his wife and in such a joyful way too. And how he wants to protect his son by making it all a game and enduring everything to do so.

I'm Italian and on the pavement just outside my school someone wrote:" Buongiorno principessa!", I don't know who it was meant to, but it's nice to see it in the days when you're a bit down and think someone wrote it for you :-)

When I watched this at 14 I thought it was sad but excellent. When I watched this again at 35 with a wife and 6 year old son, I cried rivers

The look of pure joy in her eyes knowing that for right now her husband and baby are alive when she thought they were dead is so beautiful and touching. I’m gonna cry!!

I'm from southern Italy and it's really heartwarming seeing most of you people from other countries have watched this masterpiece in our language.. I like watching foreign films in original language too, although something the dubbed version might as well be good

In my group of friends I'm the one that rarely ever cries at anything, and when we were watching this movie in class I was one of the first people that wanted to cry (I surprisingly didn't although my eyes were watery) and people were surprised even though they were crying themselves. I loved watching this movie and I definitely watch it sometimes too.

Smiling though your heart is aching... This film taught me that concept at a very young age. I can’t believe I have so many friends in my age group that have never sat through this film. Life is not beautiful after this experience, it is devastatingly bittersweet.
