Western philosophy is not merely a curiousity about the world... While it is true that platonism, aristotlianism, and others in the enlightenment age come from a point of curiousity, but they are about how to lead a good life... In that sense, even indian philosophy comes from a point of curiousity and is applied to life...

So, I'm not sure if one can extrapolate Plato as a "poet at heart" just by the fact that he uses metaphors (also not sure if mam is confusing metaphors with plato's usage of analogies). Plato in his text Republic has vehemently criticized Greek poets like Homer and Hestoid, declaring them (and poetry in general) as inculcating fear in the youth and peddling lies to make youth stand away from reason. So, there may not be such a romantic honeymoon of Plato with poetry. Also, to interpret Plato as a "poet at heart" would not be only wrong, but, according to Quinten Skinner, would be an attempt of creating a mythology. In particular, "mythology of prolepsis", where one wrongly interprets the person, text, or theory from the past to extrapolate a significance (in this case taking Plato as a poet) which is markedly different from the actual meaning of the text, theory or intent of the person.
