Several things affect this:

1) Heat. The patties and fries are sterilized by cooking, as are the buns when they are baked.

2) Water, or lack thereof. The burger/fries are dried out, so very little bacteria or mold can grow on them. The bun is the most likely part to mold, but mold still requires a constant supply of moisture to grow, and sealing the burger tightly in a small container would prevent extra moisture from getting in.

3) Salt. Salt is an OLD preservative. Been used for millennia. The patty and fries have a lot of salt on/in them. The bun not so much, though.

4) Warmth. Depending on where you kept it, warmer temperatures would promote more growth, while cooler ones would retard it.

Likely, in the second test, you got far less mold/bacterial contamination.

Shoutout to the cameraman for training the fly to land on his burger

Just FYI: the reason McDonald’s doesn’t get moldy has nothing to do with chemicals. The reason it doesn’t get moldy is because when you seal it, it doesn’t have any access to mold spores, which is needed for mold to grow. Not only that, but McDonald’s food is EXTREMELY dry. Mold needs moisture, and McDonald’s just simply doesn’t have enough moisture for mold to grow.

The more you know!

We did this in my PE class in high school. Left fries and burger in open air on a plate. After 8 months the fries shriveled a bit and the patty slightly shrunk. That's it. Didn't decay or mold at all

Back in the Middle Ages, they used salt to preserve meat and other foods. This allowed them to distribute food for days with no refrigeration. McDonald’s burgers and fries are high in salt which preserves the food. Sodium draws the bacteria causing moisture out of foods

At my high school there was a Mcdonalds burger on display to show how they don't rot. And based on the label that burger has stayed there for many years and still looks exactly the same besides from being a little flatter.

We kept a McChicken for over 12 years in a zip lock bag. We still have it. Multiple people have taken a bite through the years at parties. It's hard as a brick, but it still tastes the same.

the scientific reason is:
most of the stuff in fast food doesn't have a lot of moisture, which helps with the decomposition process.
This is also why no mold or worms form on the food item after a long time.
hope this helps
Edit: worms need an egg to appear in food, usually via a fly

Sometimes you just get that one green chip/ fries in a pack from McDonald’s (I live in Ireland idk what America calls chips but in Ireland a bag of chips is the same as French fries)

Guys, it's moisture and salt. It shouldn't rot because it's relatively dry and salty. The mold is in the air. Everywhere. And it rill take off where it takes off. That's also commercially made bread with a preservative to slow mold. You'll notice wonder bread and similar stuff takes way longer to mold than fresh bread you make at home. That's because a presevative and the moisture level. The bread is designed so you have some time to eat it. McDonald's buns aren't baked fresh daily either.
