Now THIS is the niche Eposvox content we know and love.

This is the kind of video that gets found by a desperate, underpaid intern 8 years from now, working at a backwards data backup shop.

I’ve spent the last 3 months trying to rip my hddvd collection. It’s a nightmare with how many disks spit errors. All stored in a dry temperature controlled environment. Great video.

It's been think about WB titles failing for a very long time I think they even offered a program where they would replace them with new ones or Blu-ray or something. I manage to rip about 80% of my HD DVD collection but lots failed and can not be saved.

Instructions unclear. Accidentally turned my DVD into a slice of toast.

AnyDVD "should" be an option too... Pretty sure the hddvd of "Brotherhood of the wolf" is/was the only way to get the extended version and untill last year "White Noise 2" was also only out on HDDVD in hd.

Haha, I literally figured out how to do this a few days ago. Maybe I should have waited for this video to come out! Glad I'm not the only one who had so much trouble doing this!

This one didn't really pertain to me, but I watched the entire thing. Because I love your channel brother. YT wouldn't be the same without ya and I don't ever want to see it. Thank you for always showing us how to operate ALL THIS STUFF

I wonder if you can just rip it from the HD DVD and burn it to a BluRay disc

I have owned the LG H20L since 2007, believe it or not, and it still works perfectly. My current desktop, however, has no 5.25' bays, so I picked up a cheap USB 3.0 to SATA adapter and have it sitting on my desk. I use it as my primary (only) rom drive and I have never run into any issues ripping either HD DVDs or Blu-rays. Not yet, anyway.

I recently revisited my old HDDVDs and was very sad to find a couple of them have disc rot. Also, it seems HDDVDs are extremely sensitive to any debris or smudges. One of my discs had some old smudges on it, and even after cleaning it, the movie skipped frames and froze. Could just be my player, but any disc that isn’t completely spotless will skip in some areas. Hopefully someone has researched whether or not there are any HDDVDs with exclusive content so that data can be saved before the discs rot.

How about the DMCA, anti-circumvention laws?
You're not supposed to circumvent DRM, right?

I noticed make mkv is able to rip more deteriorated disks than handbrake.

I have one disk that plays but does not want to rip due to deterioration. I tried waxing the disc. Nogo. Im going to put the disk in the fridge for a bit then try it.

Main reason for me to backup dvds is because of rot. If stored properly even dvds will almost last forever.

Some storage rules: keep in original case, Do not stack, keep room temp 78 or lower, keep away from light, keep away from heat source, keep humidity low, no water exposure, remove oils from disc, handle with gloves, rip backups to blu-ray or mdisc.

*pats his XBox 360 HD-DVD drive he's owned for 10+ years* I bought Serenity on HD-DVD years before I owned that! God I'm such a nerd. The XBox HD-DVD drive is pretty decent as an external drive if you have a modern machine without an optical drive. Obviously not a burner, but not an issue for most.

I'd been toying with the idea of grabbing an xbox 360 hd-dvd drive next time I visit the USA in order to rip my small collection of about 20 HD-DVDs. But after watching this video, I'm having second thoughts. The thought of giving my old forgotten media a second life in Plex/Jellyfin seemed very appealing, but now I'm not so sure if it's worth the headache of a very uncertain success rate.

which would you recommend between emby and kodi? I have my 4k uhd disc ripped in uncompressed iso format.

Another caveat when ripping HD-DVD's is that the video stream on the disc contains soft 3:2 pulldown flags. MakeMKV doesn't remove those and Plex sees those as 1080i 60Hz instead of 1080p 24Hz.
You need to run the MKV files through a command line utility called eac3to extract the video stream while removing the 3:2 pulldown flags. You can then reinsert the video stream into the MKV with MKVtoolnixGUI.

I've also found that MakeMKV 1.17.5 has trouble with HD-DVD's with AACS versions greater than v1. The utility 'DumpHD' can backup those discs to a folder which you can open up in makemkv as you would a BD folder backup.

I had a collection of around 400 HD DVD’s and about half of them failed due to disc rot, including my blade runner box set. I had zero issues with make mkv, I have a LG combo drive that does BD & HD DVD. I even had a full on setup with a Toshiba E10 standalone player but nothing would read half of my discs that failed. I recommend everyone rip their discs as soon as possible because the format is a ticking time bomb. Most of my WB discs failed but my Universal ones were mostly fine.

It's not disc rot. It's a manufacturing error on only Warner Bros releases coming from one factory.

Great info. Only wish I still had the Xbox hdDVD player to try and rip the 20 movies I have on hand. Really don’t feel like tracking down one and spending the extra money.
What if some of the movies have digital codes, wouldn’t that work to transfer the content on your computer?
