Paddy's DIY - How to replace the hinges on a uPVC window
Another great instructional video brought to you by Paddy's DIY

In this video I’m going to show you how to replace the hinges on a uPVC window. The window in this video is a top hung window; it is the exact same process for replacing the hinges on a side hung window. This is also the same process for any other window type that uses friction stay window hinges. (eg. Timber / wooden windows or aluminium windows)

You can see in the video that there is a huge gap on one side of the window. This gap will start out very small, but will eventually get bigger and bigger over time. It is important to lubricate the hinges once or twice a year to prevent this from happening. It is also important to clean out any dirt from the hinges, as this can stop them moving freely and put strain on the hinges. Broken hinges are the number one cause of draughty windows. Replacing the hinges will fix this gap and will have the window closing tightly to the seals. A lot of people think that their seals have shrunk or need replacing, when in the majority of cases it's the hinges that need replacing.

Always take extra care when replacing the hinges on your window. Remember the bigger the sash, the heavier it’s going to be. Get someone to help you hold and lift the sash when you’re replacing the hinges.

I watched this a few weeks ago then went on Amazon and ordered 4 pairs of hinges. Total cost was £30. Took about 20 minutes per window. Now have no draughts and can’t hear the noise outside. I’d been quoted £150 for a company to come and do it for me.
The hardest part is getting the window back on because of how heavy and awkward they are.
Thanks for the video, you saved me a lot of cash.

I find Irish DIY channels like this, explain things a LOT better than others.

Regarding alignment, I find nipping the screws up, but just enough to hold the sash, close the window (use the HEEL of your hand to get the position perfect) carefully open the window then simply tighten up the screws. Job done.

Thanks for the video chap, was going to pay someone £65 to replace my hinges, now i'm going to attempt it myself, so should cost £6 plus some elbow grease! You just saved me £59!

Thank you, so easy to follow and actually see the issues one is going to face. All DIY videos should be like this, not slick miss half of the feel of the actual job. Thanks.

Never had to change a hinge before but your video made it so easy. I was done in less than an hour, would have been less but I had to realign one hinge. The window actually fits the frame better now as before, the diagonals never really lined up, great tip! Many thanks.

Thank you for this. The 13mm and 17mm depth information was invaluable as I have the 17mm one! It's even marked on them when I removed the window. Spacers needed, and now I know where to fit those too.

Worked a treat, cheers. Had to use the packers on my opener, very straight forward process as shown in the video. I struggled on my own when removing/replacing the entire unit and like to think I'm fairly handy with DIY. Deffinately worth someone giving you a hand to take the weight of the window when taking off/replacing if you can find someone.

Nice one Paddy, glad you explained the packers and hinge side.👍

Very helpful. Most useful comment was the statement that fit would involve "trial and error". Helped me to adjust holes in sash to suit the fit.👍

I have three of these in my house and 2 fans for a two story and a basement. 3br 2 ba. And my house is cool while outside is 90. They are a little noisy but nothing to out of the ordinary. Absolutely recommend.

brilliant video as some geezer wanted £90 to sort this I'm all for the small business man making a living but looking at this video and given his experience looking at 30 mins max to complete the job

You tube at its best - all I need now is to work out what length of hinge I need. There are several standard lengths measured in inches: 10 inch, 12 inch and so on.

Just changed the hinges on two of my uPVC windows that had gaps in the corners thanks to your detailed instructions.

I found the same uPVC hinges you used in Screwfix. Very smooth glide and snug fit.

Keep up the good work. Will change the third one another time. Can you do a video on replacing the seals and the glass too please?

Top man, you may have just saved my windows (and energy bills)! As an idea, I shall be using suction cup lifters to hold the window when I remove it.

Christ. The one in this video came out nice and easy. I've just wrestled a 1100 x 900mm monster with a mangled hinge out of a 2nd floor window on my billy no mates. I'm grateful for the video, it gave me the confidence to crack on.
