This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 AWD electric SUV.VW says, the ID.4 is a car for “the millions, not the millionaires. With a competitive price point for an EV under $45,000 CAD/$40,000 USD, this is one to consider especially with EV rebates in both Canada and the US. The ID.4 RWD has a single rear mounted electric motor with 201 horsepower and the dual motor AWD model has 302 horsepower. RWD gets 400 km/260 miles of EV range and AWD 386 km/249 miles of EV range. This EV comes with standard RWD. This EV has a 82-kWh lithium-ion battery that has a maximum charging rate of 11 kW AC or 125 kW with a DC charger. On the road, you can charge 5% to 80% in an estimated 38 minutes. That means a 10-minute charge can add almost 100km of range on a DC fast-charger. While at home, it can take as little as 7.5 hours to reach full charge on a level 2 charger. All ID.4 models come with 3 years of unlimited charging sessions at any Electrify Canada DC fast charging stations. There are loads of standard features in this electric vehicle including, a 10” touchscreen, a 5.3” digital gauge display, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, cloth or leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, a leather wrapped heated steering wheel, LED headlights and LED taillights, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert plus 19” wheels. The ID.4 AWD can tow 2700 pounds and Volkswagen offers a warranty of 4 years or 80,000 km/50,000 miles. In the US, Volkswagen offers 2 years of free scheduled maintenance or 20,000 miles.

After testing all the compact suv ICE vehicles, I took a spin in an ID.4. That experience led me to order one the following day. The car has been wonderful, with only a couple of little niggles related to interior lighting algorithms. That should be corrected in future software updates. The car is smooth, quiet, roomy, handles beutifully, and is very well constructed. Rather than spending $160 per month on gasoline, the ID.4 has used less than $20 per month in charging costs on a Level 2 garage charging station. No more oil changes, etc., etc., etc. For the naysayers out there . . . if you want a car with a 'Frunk', buy a car with a 'Frunk', and stop complaining!

I'm so far away from being able to afford an electric vehicle, but I keep watching your videos because they consistently deliver in terms of quality and entertainment. Please keep up the great work.

If I had to buy an electric vehicle, this model would be at the top the list. Volkswagen has it priced appropriately, given it classic Germanic styling/engineering and is from a proven reputable automotive brand. Finally there is a compelling electric product. Though I’m not giving up on gasoline anytime yet. Thanks for the video.

More electric vehicles need to look and operate like this, a normal vehicle that happens to be electric rather than a gadgetified tupperware container. I think they would have been more popular years ago if the manufacturers had went with that strategy. They spend so much money on the marketing and styling and then throw that out to make the thing look unique for the sake of being different. They already did the design work just focus on the little stuff like the dial shifter frees up console space. This is a good effort from Volkswagen.

Great review guys! I find the ID4 much more visually appealing than Toyota’s announced bz4x. 👍

You promised this review and you delivered! Thank you and well done as always!! And, you guys are so fun to watch together. I too am convinced that the AWD model is the way to go; especially living in BC. I sure hope that VW will keep the price point so that we can take advantage of the Fed and Provincial rebates.

The Model Y is 76k now... this is 53k after the rebate. And Tesla is still having build quality issues. If you want more luxury go buy a Q4 progressiv for 65k, 11k less than the Model Y. I called several VW Ontario dealerships and they said if I order now it might take 12 months to get an ID4. Anyways, thanks for the great review.

Edit: Model Y is now 87/88k CAD. And the 2023 ID4 AWD top trim is 62k. The ID4 still gets the 5k rebate.

Hm, Andrea's opening driving scene smile was a good sign for this EV! 👍🏻

In my 2023 ID4, I can use voice commands to control the radio, climate control, and navigation. So I rarely use the buttons or the touch screen - especially when I am driving.

Really fine review as usual, folks. I think VW has hit the bullseye on the target they set for themselves -- an EV that drives like a conventional dinosaur juice drinker. More than sufficient power in the AWD model for the vast majority of drivers. Aimed squarely at the most popular SUV size segment. A price point that even without a tax rebate won't cause most consumers willing to purchase a new vehicle to run screaming from a VW showroom. And importantly, looks that aren't reminiscent of a spaceship from a 1930's Flash Gordon movie serial.

Personally, I find the looks of the forthcoming KIA EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq5 appealing but I think VW is right that a more conventional looking SUV appeals to a wider range of consumers. After all, despite the hype associated with EVs, the 2% "take rate" is about the same as the vanishingly small minivan market in the US. There is a huge potential market among folks who would feel comfortable in a "stealth" EV, just as so many have moved to "stealth" hybrids. And while the neck snapping acceleration of high performance EVs will excite internet fanboys, the price for that performance means only a tiny minority will ever sign up such vehicles (or have the credit rating to qualify to do so.)

Range anxiety and the absence of a home charging option for many will continue to constrain the EV market for a while. But here in the US the recent infrastructure bill passed by Congress will pump about $7.5 billion into expanding the network to half a million recharging stations. And a substantial segment of consumers will opt for an EV as a "second" vehicle and discover that their "first" vehicle is actually not used nearly as much as they had anticipated.

With a kid shortly off to college and a shortage of supply I'm resisting the temptation to purchase a new car at the moment. But I suspect that in a year or two, the next inhabitant of the garage will need a level two electric power source.

Even though I’m currently not looking at getting a car I really like your videos. The two of you are well balanced in your reviews.

They missed the opportunity to mention that the gauge cluster display is mounted on the steering wheel column so the position of the wheel doesn’t affect visibility. That’s excellent design in my book.

I know you get the upper trim on any car you or anyone else test but I really would like to see someone test the lower trim version of a car. I know you tested the ID4 but everytime I see a Ionic5 tested it is their most expensive version. Some of us like the everyday trim version, not the most expensive. Great video. Liked the drive in my neighborhood!

I seen so many v loggers who review the cars. But you are really the best reviewer I ever seen so far. Keep it up .

You answered all my questions on ID4 as a normal car driver, thanks.

This was a great overview. Andrea looked like she was having so much fun (until Zack asked her to stop :) funny how Andrea said recently she wasn't quite ready for an EV yet, and she was worried about speeding tickets (as a Cayenne owner). Looks like Porsche isn't the only part of the VW group that likes to have fun :)

Nice review. Don’t like the gear-selector at all. But the display is certainly better than the Mach E. Tesla is still the standard bearer for EVs though in my opinion

I’ve seen a few of your reviews now, and I really enjoy them. Thanks sharing the info! I’m in the US and I wish we could get a heat pump, but luckily I live in the southwest and it won’t be that big of a deal for me. I also find it funny that everybody complains about it not having a frunk. People don’t seem to get that VW would have had to take away from interior space and make the hood longer in order to have a frunk, or they would have had to make it a bigger vehicle all the way around, which would have pushed the price up. I think they made a good choice with what they did here.
