Hi it's Miriam from Twinkl here. If you're looking to teach diary writing, Twinkl has a large variety of diary templates activities and resource packs to guide you but first let's take a look at the features of a diary entry.
The features of diary writing include first person, past tense, paragraphs, observations, thoughts and feelings, date and introduction for each entry, chronological order, detail and description, emotive language and time conjunctions.
It's important children explore these features as a class before writing their final diary entry you could do this by giving children an example of a diary entry and asking them to find and highlight the features of a text or you could do a shared write session where the teacher and the whole class create a diary entry together. Children will be asked to create sentences using the features this is a great way for them to practice using the features within a sentence and you can address any misconceptions. we have a lot of diary entry resources over on the website for you to use. I'm going to show you just some that i love. This second world war evacuee diary writing resource pack is a great way to incorporate history into your literacy lessons.
