That would be terrifying with the wave crashing and secure personnel lines attached. Just hoping those waves can't sweep you off.

They did it as a prank “uh guys where’s my heli” “someone stole it ;)”

Keep in mind that the flight deck is about 40 to 60 ft above water.

I've been through waves like this when we are going into the strait of Magellan.

Someone check on their maintenance Master Chief. Dude probably has PTSD from seeing his bird get smacked around like that.

That's gonna be a nightmare for maintenance crews 😢

I went thru seas like this twice aboard USS John C. Stennis CVN-74 on the way to Australia in 1998 and again in 2000. Walking around was challenging but it was the best sleep ever. Rocked you to sleep just like a baby. I havent had as good of sleep since

I feel like floridaman needs its own aircraftcarrier to go into storms and perform crazy aeronautics stunts in storms

Was on that ship and that’s my squadron’s bird. He had great sleep for that week. The helicopter was not damaged but we did have to do a fresh water “bath” after this, every nook and cranny had to be salt free

I was on one of the support ships. My first typhoon. Ended up swiping all the antennas off and had to take shelter in Guam...westpack 03 baby!

My unc was on the Kittyhawk.
He used match sticks and Elmer's glue to create a replica,
My mother has it now.

Man...hats off to the men and women that have to routinely land on carriers in storms, night, ....both. Obviously I'm no expert (but I did stay at a holiday Inn express last night) but from what I've heard carrier landings are often more stressful than actual combat. That's crazy and those pilots that make it look easy have all earned my respect.

I have a co worker who was on the USS Kittyhawk during this typhoon, he said even inside the ship was a Rollercoaster ride he will never forget.

Was on The Kitty Hawk for three years, all on the flight deck. I can confirm these typhoon moments are legitimately terrifying.

I998. U.S.S. Kitty Hawk relieved the U.S.S. Independence as the forward deployed carrier based in Japan. The transfer of most presonnel & aircraft took place in Hawaii. June or July of 98. The Independence being the oldest active duty ship on active duty was the first carrier to get to carry the "DON'T TREAD ON ME" ensign. She transferred it to the Kitty Hawk, being the next oldest ship on continous active duty. The swap took place after the annual RIMPAC exercise.

The crew chief for that chopper is going to be quite upset

That helo is a decommissioned hulk. It's used for fire fighting practice and flight deck movement training. All carriers have one. It couldn't have "just landed" since it doesn't even have rotor blades installed.

That is the fastest. A helicopter has ever been tied down a guarantee.

My grandfather in law served on several Flattops and said how well they sailed in storms and also how bad DDs sailed, he didn't like the smaller ships 😂. RIP Chief Spence.
