I am so scared when the aircraft just shakes a little in a normal flight. And then there are these people, just fly into a hurricane.
Respect.

Flying through this for the first time must be an incredibly freaky feeling

I love the Hurricane Hunters: their flying lab, Kermit on watch duty in the cockpit, the dedicated scientists tracking the weather beasts, and last, but not least, the pilots with nerves of steal. After getting tossed around, the interior of the plane looked like the remnants of a drunken frat party.

I worked as a Mechanic, Maintenance Inspector and Propulsion Shop Tech for over 2 decades w/ a U.S. Major Commercial Air Carrier and seeing an A/C put up with those flight conditions still astounds me, even though it shouldn't.
The fact that these Lockheed WP-3D Orion A/C date back 47 years tells you all you need to know about how thorough A/C maintenance is today and how much they knew about A/C in the mid 70's. Lockheed airframe and Rolls Royce Engines, tough to beat.

Normal flight: "CB on ahead, let's evade, to the right"
Hurricane Hunter flight: "Now... where's the Hurricane?! Ah there you are, let's get right into it"

Awesome flight, stay healthy for all of us & Safety First! Peace across the Globe ✌😉

You guys are Awesome. Thanks for all your hard work and the risks you take. Love those old P3s. Used to work on them in the Navy.

You are the true weather heroes putting your lives out there so that the rest of us can be able to maneuver safely around the hurricanes.

My grandpa did a short time on P-3C's with VP-45 during his 25 years of service with the Navy. Instead of hunting hurricanes, he was patrolling off the Florida coast hunting submarines.

I thought lightning was rare in Hurricane clouds

Looks like flying through a lovecraft hellscape that’s really beautiful.

That plane must weight a lot with all those balls of steel onboard.

I always wanted to fly these. Before they were nicknamed Kermit and Miss Piggy I got to walk through one of them at an airshow in Homestead Florida and asked the pilot why they used a turboprop aircraft. As I had suspected, it was because they have access to almost instant power from the engines if need be. They keep the 210kt penetration speed this way. Lockheed built some stout airframes here. Glad they were upgraded
