Why You’re Losing in Football Manager

I have discovered a disease amongst the Football Manager community. In my effort to save your saves on FM21 there is one thing that tends to hold you back above all else, the reason so many people have trouble with Football Manager progression to the very top level. The Erik Mendes syndrome, player attachment syndrome, affects your scouting and transfers in Football Manager to such an extent that your team cannot actually realize its potential in your save.

Part of Football Manager that makes us fall in love is the stories. That’s why it’s the Erik Mendes syndrome, he scored 146 goals in 152 games through three promotions with my club Oriental Dragon on Twitch. But, at a certain point, everyone is dead weight. Being able to tell the difference between a wonderkid transfer that changes lives and another player that fits your tactic, who you’ve had for years, that isn’t good enough is quite the trick. It’s hard to convince yourself to make these moves. If you want to succeed at Football Manager though, at the very top level, you have to. This is the video for you.

Much Love,
FM Senpai

It is prophesied that one day Zealand's chest hair will connect with his beard and when that day arrives HE will become the one true FM God

Edit: I updated my comment for a spelling mistake and my Zealand heart went away 😔

Why am I loosing at FM? Becusae I used The Aniti-Pep Tactic and got a bunch of League 2 hillbillies all the way into the premiership with a transfer budget of about the value of a packet of crisps.

I was leading a game 4-0 at half time. Game ended 5-5. Had to drop the game for about a week because I couldn't go through that again. The worst part is that I scored a goal to make it 5-4 in the 75th minute and I thought I'd won hadn't

There's those times when you upgrade a player position with a new wonderkid and your 'Bonded' player still performs better on the pitch even though you know you should let him go... how can ignore that he still scores goals at 34, with 12 Finishing 8 Composure, yes I want to start my 21 15 Finishing 12 composure and 14 pace acceleration but dammit he (34 declining past it player) has 17 from 22 games compared to 6 from 18... I can't let go !!

Hey Zealand, just recently switched from fifa to FM 21 and love your vids. I would like to see a video about selling your best players for a lot of money and then reinvesting it.
thanks

You say that Macau is not gonna produce your wonderkid, but here i am with the one singaporean regen in my team that's worth like 30 mil playing a solid la-liga title contender game. You go Robbat, live your dreams. Always fun to look at the national team and see values of either nothing or a few grand and then ma boi Robbat chonking in with 30 mil.
I always like to imagine that that's how the players talk about it "Oh, yeah no, the singaporean team is really underrated. We mean business. We got a combined net worth on transfer market of 30.1 million in our starting eleven."

Lol, this one hits hard. I remember my FM20 unemployed save with York City FC. It was a hell of a journey from Vanerama north to PL and after the first season we got stacked with young players, who just got better. By the time we got to Championship i knew all of the core. Very though transfer window it was.

Hey Z - one key point to note aswell is relevent to playing in unfamliar leagues. So we all know that to win the Prem you want players with 16-20 in key attributes, generally speaking. But you don't need that for winning the Belarusian league do you. So if I'm playing in an unfamiliar league, when I do what you said, it can be easy to misunderstand exactly what's needed to progress in the league you're in.

So imagine in your save you've just finished 11th - you're not going to reasonably expect to win the league next season, but you may want to realistically aim for 5th/6th for example. I then have a look at the teams who finished 4-7 in the league, and compare their best player in each position directly to my own best player in each position. If I don't know the standard of quality in the league because I'm playing in some backwater league somewhere, that is a great way to apply perspective to your own team and what isd actually needed to improve, rather than what you perhaps thought you needed to improve.

Had this with Adam Idah in a Sheffield Wednesday save, set championship records for scoring and kept getting 15-20 goals in the first couple seasons in the prem. However, once I got top 4 two seasons in a row, Idah went from 4 Star to a two star rating and even though he's my sub striker, he's only scored something like 2 in 15 appearances. Really don't want to let hine go though...

I feel attacked (especially after getting two straight promotions), and after seeing my first season favorites fall to like fifth-choice, I've loaned like 8 of them out. Now I feel like the Serbian Chelsea, challenging for the title while still having 2nd-tier level players. *evil laugh*

It reminds me of the awesome real life story of my fellow dane Yussouf Poulsen, who plays at RB Leipzig. He was a young talented youth national player of ours, who moved to RB Leipzig when they were in the 3. Bundesliga. Even though the club had massive ambitions and red bull money, people were wondering. It was a weird move as he had offers from a lot bigger clubs. X years later he is still in the clubs starting 11 and if i remember correctly he is vice captain now. He is in the starting 11 of the national team aswell. And amongst other things he has played in the semi finals of the champions league for the club. Moving to a club in the 3. bundesliga to years later still being a starter, when they are playing amongst the 4 best teams in Europe, is an amazing story.

All legends of my saves retire in my club. I just can't let them go or I let them go at 35.
