Its a must for pc rental/computer shop businesses. Cuz some kids that rent pc just open multiple tabs, dl viruses, delete system files etc.

Been testing this utility and other similar ones in a Library setting since July 2014. We like it, a lot, but...

You do have to be careful not to get yourself in a "Boot Loop" usually associated with performing system updates. As many of you will know, if you perform updates, Windows will often require a reboot after updating. Even after the system tells you that Windows is done updating, new updates can just pop-up.

If the system was frozen between downloaded updates "poised for installation", then the system is rebooted in a frozen state, the updates won't be applied, potentially causing a "Boot Loop" or a "Reboot Loop."

If this happens, it's a pain to resolve. The Faronics folks can help with the problem, but it's nearly unresolvable without their assistance. This by the way is from a very recent personal experience.

So, just make sure you completely "thaw" your drive so that it stays thawed between all of the updates during a maintenance session, perform all updates, restart several more times after all updates to be sure there are no updates left "hanging out there" (especially) those that require a Shutdown to apply, then re-freeze.

Really wish the Faronics folks offered a command line thawing option on all of their Deep Freeze products. That way one could boot with a DVD or USB Windows rescue drive to thaw the system, then resolve whichever issue there was and then re-freeze from within Windows or the command line.

It would also be nice if the utility would recognize in advance, the likelihood of a "Boot Loop" situation. It seems to me that it shouldn't be that hard on their part to devise a method to avoid this type of situation.

Anyway, Deep Freeze Standard is a great utility for a small number of systems at a relatively low price. Coffee shops, small libraries, home users, etc.. As Matt mentions, it will save the customers from having to call a tech (like him or me) to clean off a system. It will definitely save them money and ultimately hit a tech's bottom line, but worth it in the end for most.

For larger settings, Faronics offers an Enterprise version. This I believe may have a command line thawing option.

There are free tools that do much of this such as Rollback RX, but it's a very good thing to have a paid for utility with solid tech support to help when things go South.

I'd give Deep Freeze (5) out of (5) stars if not for the Boot Loop potential.

BTW -- Great to see you back Matt!

Cheers!

I wonder if this can be used to permanently defeat auto updates on Windows 10

We found out the school put this on our computers in highschool without telling us. It is used to protect the oc and also logs the activity of the users. We later discovered a different program that allowed remote viewing in real time. Logged keystrokes, copied event viewers logs, and network/driver activity. File recovery programs may successfully recover files after deep-freeze reboot.

Good program but it's a hassle to productivity. Only time you might have this is for business/company/guest computers.

Good review there Matt, seems like I'll be a regular on your channel.

While in essence I do like deep freeze, I have a huge problem with it having to be rebooted into a thawed state every time you want to make changes, as little as they may seem. Windows updates, for instance. I don't see that in other products that offer the same like Reboot restore rx, to give an example. I don't want to be re-imaging my machine.

Oh and ps. I didn't find anything 'nasal' in your voice, in case you were wondering lol. I  found it rather standard, in fact.

Love the videos. Have you tried Reboot Restore Rx? I was interested in trying it mainly because it was a free version (or continuation I guess) of Windows SteadyState. I later found people comparing the free RRRX to Deep Freeze. Does Deep Freeze have a free version? How does RRRX compare to Deep Freeze?

So lets say you freeze the system, then make some changes and decide you actually want to keep these changes. Can you just unfreeze the system to keep the changes or do you need to fist unfreeze, reboot make changes and then freeze?

what if you uninstall Deep Freeze? Or if that prompts password, what if you manually delete the Deep Freeze files?

Wow, that's really dangerous!

So what you're saying is that I may be saving a ton of stuff for a week into my documents folder or just on a desktop and then if I forget and reboot all my work will be gone! Just like that. Are you kidding me!

Also other apps save their data while running. With this freezing stuff all of that will be gone as well. Is that how it works?

Hello bro.
I hope you still making a videos.
Can I ask a question?
Can I install any virus and it won't do any changes to my computer after rebooting?
Its easy to answer yes with explanation or no with explanation.

You should consider doing a Windows 10 security review :)

Hey Matt! Have you ever thought of doing windows server related videos. Things such as AD DS, AAA, WDS, and any other roles that you use on the day to day bases. If you don't know if you do any of that stuff, never mind. Just a thought.

Also I imagine you would need to turn it off every time there are windows updates or any application updates. I have game updates every day, I would have to thaw drive, reboot, update, freeze drive and reboot again every day. I really like the concept though and I think what it really needs is to be able to be toggled on and off without needing a reboot, so I can toggle off, update an app, then toggle on again (or even just a "refreeze current state" button I can press before I turn off the pc)
