Youd be surpised how many classically trained pianists CANNOT improvise.

I had my guitar at a friends house and I said we should jam. I just started messing around in Bm and asked her to riff over it with her piano.

It was physically impossible for her. She said she needs actual notes infront of her.

So strange. Like knowing how to read but not knowing how to speak.

I’ve been playing piano since I was 6 for 13 years. I can read chords and music and still to this day I had never thought of a chords as a mere selection of notes from a modal scale. Opened my mind completely

Charles, you should read and maybe do a book review of "Improvisation: Its nature and practice in music" by Derek Bailey. This book might sound a bit academic but it's perfectly written for both the academic crowd and the average listener, and it's fairly short. A real classic on the topic

This is the answer I didn't want to hear but needed to hear. My teacher always told me to practice scales but I always tried to get out of it. Now it is time to embrace the grind!

Someone (Miles Davis, I think?) once defined improvisation as “Think of a phrase, then don’t play it”. That sounds like a joke, or maybe a koan, but I’ve found that for someone with as little training as me, it really does seem to work that way: I have a phrase in mind, but my fingers find something different without me having to think for them.
