Restoring a Beautiful Antique Range in our Historic Cottage Kitchen | My Tiny Estate

We are finally tackling the very last space that we need to renovate in the Servant’s Quarters – the Servant’s Kitchen! We’ve already completed the bedroom, the living room and the bathroom on the lower level; as well as the entire upper floor. Now – it’s time to transform this historic kitchen space back to its former glory. Kitchens are always time-consuming projects and this is no exception. At the heart of this space is an amazing old range from 1860 that requires some painstaking cleaning and careful gluing of broken bits and pieces. It will be incredible when it’s finished! We also need to build all the cabinetry and tackle the back-breaking project of cleaning more than 100 years of dirt off a terracotta floor. There is still work to be done but this old cottage will be finished soon!

Your mother deserves an award! That was quite a job. And the floors are a nightmare. My back was hurting for you Borje. The work and vision to transform kitchen are so inspiring.

I love your decision to save the floor and the range. It’s clear it is taking phenomenal effort but it’s not lost on your viewers. Bravo

Your mother is a legend! I was just thinking if you dropped some of the stove’s fittings into Coca Cola it would probably clean up really well. 😊

Every room you renovate is beautiful, tasteful, elegant simply wonderful, you do everything very carefully with a lot of patience and thought, so the end result is always perfect. I also paint the walls with a small roller, even though it's always quicker with a large one, I prefer to paint for longer but it's much more comfortable. Great mum💐

My grandmother used to have one of those old ovens in her house. She used it on a regular basis and blackleaded it every month to keep it from rusting, a uniform colour and shiny.

Oh boy, this took me back to my childhood when one of my Saturday jobs for pocket money was to black lead the range and scrub the terracotta tiles and polish them in my Grandparents early Georgian farmhouse. Such hard work but a tremendous satisfaction when it was all done. It's all coming together so well guys. I love to watch your progress and enjoy your style choices.

Nothing is more pleasing to the eye than symmetry ❤ dean awesome idea with the corbels. Can't wait to see that diy because corbels are so difficult to find and when you do find them they're super expensive.😊

Not removing the board in the corner above the proving cupboard because you're afraid of what you'll find... incredibly relatable

Borja's mom is such a good sport. She deserves a spa day. It was probably for the best that you nixed the Borja Edgar Allan Poe-esque time capsule.

Loved watching that. You turn a mess into a beautiful room n you both make it look so easy - but so much work goes into it. Loved your Mum laughing at your squeaking inside the cupboard. (almost - but not quite - as funny as RAT scream😅) IRELAND

Whenever I pass the estate, it's hard to imagine what a hive of activity it is behind what I still think of as the Library.

I really thought that the quarry tiles were too far gone to restore. I miss them in my house. They had to be removed because they were so badly damaged.

I also wish that I still had the cooking range that was in the house when my grandparents moved in almost 100 years ago. I can still see the shadow of the old fireplace where it stood, and I'm reminded of it every day. I can understand why they were removed by most people. I remember my grandma using black lead on it every day to maintain it. One missed day, and the rust began to appear.

My grandma used to have a stew pot on the top. The pot was never emptied. Every time a meal was served, it was topped up with vegetables, and, if she was lucky, some meat. Her new mother in law had given her the pot, filled, when my grandparents moved into their first house before the FWW. It was still being used into the 1960s! The memory of the taste makes my mouth water. It would be served with potatoes left in the oven all day to bake. I suppose that 'elf and safety will be screaming, but no one was ever ill eating this stew.

Looking forward to the next episode. Can we have more of Borja near to screaming when locked away? 😂
