Carnival Cruise Lines Increase Gratuity Tipping - Automatic Tips

Carnival Cruise Lines just increased its Gratuity rates. A discussion of the changes as well as general trends with regards to cost and cruising with Carnival. Would it be better if Carnival increased it's based rates or should things be a la carte?

Isn't it only one dollar more per day for anything other than a suite? Not that big of a deal.

This auto gratuity vs self tip thing is controversial. I have a personal "philosophy" that I follow. Namely: I do with my money whatever I choose to do because it's the money in my pocket. And I afford others the courtesy to do the same with theirs. Bearing in mind that the cruise staff members are losing money due to this auto gratuity program, and are laboring for me in doing tasks that I am capable of doing for myself, I gladly tip those staff members who directly provide me a service, on the top sun decks, in my cabin, at my dinner table, or at the lounge bars. Not that the captain doesn't deserve a hand to hand slide of cash every now and then, if you meet him and decide to do that- but I have looked up their income and due to the enormous responsibility they have, they pull in a just deserved hefty annual income- so to me- he is all set.
If ever I decide to go cruising, I just make it a point to include in our early planning, the amount charged upfront for gratuities, but most definately we will plan in advance to have a stack of $ on hand to show our appreciation for those staff members we encounter daily who provide direct service to us.
