I had to inform my manager that I was leaving for the weekend and on my vacation, but she wanted my phone kept on in case they would need someone to cover. When I told her I was gonna be 6hours away from the office for my vacation she started introducing the local vacation policy to ensure no one goes on vacation away from the locality.

You're restricted to the local geographic area by the employer? That's an employer imposed restriction on movement. That makes you on call. That means you get paid for that time because on call time is paid work time. It's pretty straight forward.

I remember the next part to this. Manager told her she wouldn't have a job to come back to, so she got a new one while on vacation. Then manager got REALLY mad when she didn't come into work the following Monday at all.

My sister was in management. She was required to have her phone on all the time. We were driving through the mountains and had no service. Her boss gave her crap. 2 weeks later she quit after putting up with this for 9 yrs. She found a better job with higher pay after 5 you are done for the day. She’s so much happier.

It's actually illegal in Germany for employers to contact employees while they are outside work hours either when they are off from their shift, vacation, or sick leave. I wish that would apply for the U.S. 😬

I would have walked out while she was still talking. “Who approved you to go on vacation 6 hours away”??? I would have walked out, called corporate HR and told them this manager is trying to control peoples time off. Completely an abuse of power and I want a verbal and written apology before I will continue working with this person.

Vacation is vacation. My time. I go when I want on my schedule. Approved? Nobody is required to approve anything.

I take snapshots of approved time, and when the time comes, I am simply absent.
It's not my job to remind anyone I am off. I do my work, and do it well, and when my off time comes, I am gone.
