Alternate theory: the sharks are in an aquarium. That would explain the different species, as aquariums sometimes put different species of sharks that they know won’t harm each other in the same tanks. The older sharks are the ones that had been there the longest, so they “adopt” the younger sharks that are caught in the wild and help them adjust to their new life.
