Side effects include (but aren't limited to) extreme thirst, lethargy and weight loss.

This is how I found out I was diabetic. Couldn't stop drinking water but would constantly throw up, had to urinate every 30 minutes, my mouth was bone dry, fatigued and dizzy all the time. I finally went to the emergency room where I was diagnosed as diabetic and my blood sugars were around 600.

I went into ketoacidosis once in my life. I know exactly how it feels, single-handedly the worst experience I’ve ever had in my life. I had constant vomiting, nausea and was exhausted until my parent rushed me to hospital.

I was asleep while my keytones were high and woke up around 11 am (went to sleep at 10pm the night before), so this had been happening all night.

I really consider myself lucky that I made a quick and full recovery from it judging by how long it went on for. And to any other diabetics out there, I’d you feel sick and don’t know why, please for the love of god CHECK YOUR KEYTONES.

My one year old has recently been diagnosed T1D after going through severe DKA.
Two GP visits, and a visit to Minor Injuries Unit, they all insisted it was tonsillitis. Only after I took him to A&E (where he then began rapidly declining) and I was adamant that there was something more going on was he diagnosed. Thankfully he was in the right place at the right time. All the signs were there but those who ought to know, didn't.

I was diagnosed with type 1 in 2019 my school noticed I was taking on alot more water and was quickly losing weight as my family never cared about me the school called my GP on behalf of me and I had an appointment the doctor did a urine sample and a ketone test and she noticed very high glucose in the urine and then checked my ketone’s immediately. I got a reading above 8mmol/L and without hesitation she instantly admitted me to hospital. I was scared I was only 12 didn’t know what was going on. I was in the hospital on my own for hours then a consultant came in and told me in detail what the tests were showing and diagnosed me. My worst fear came true as my mum also has type 1. I spent over a week in hospital really poorly the nurses saved my life and I will be forever grateful for what they do. People if you feel poorly it’s important to let your doctor know immediately I was lucky my school picked it up and stepped in otherwise I wouldn’t of been treated in time as I was already very unwell.

Recently experienced DKA, I’m a type 1 diabetic of about 28 years. I felt like I was near death. I never want to experience that again!

My dad got diabetes type 1 at 45 and that’s rare and because of that he didn’t manage it well and when he was 48 he didn’t take his insulin for a day and a half my mum found him on the couch acting crazy and not knowing where he was or anything the ambulance came and he died on the way they got him back to life but he ended up having massive seizures that caused brain damage and he was in hospital for 2 more years then he eventually got his peace at 50 years old on November 23 2023 I’m only 25 and have 2 kids that he never got to meet ones just turned 2 and the other turned one not long ago people don’t understand how dangerous it is

My wife discovered she had Type 1 diabetes and DKA by going into a diabetic comer when she was in high school - 22 years ago. Sometimes when a patient has ketones, their breath smells sweet like pear drops. My wife has DKA more frequently than she should. She manages her glucose levels better now she has an insulin pump and Freestyle libre sensor, but it isn't perfect.

In fact, she's in hospital being treated for DKA as I leave this comment.

If you can get your hands on an insulin pump, glucose monitor and ketones metre, it is well worth it. Speak to your diabetic nurse/consultant. You can purchase glucose metres relatively cheap from your local pharmacist.
