Evansville Music Academy Instructor, Jon sat down with Brett to talk about the @fender Stories Collection - 1954 Eric Johnson "Virginia" Stratocaster.

The Strat Jon is playing is the '54 Virginia, modeled after one of his most prized and cherished Strats. It has a 2-Piece Offset Seam Sassafras body, with a soft "V" Neck, and a Maple Neck. 25.5" Scale Length and 12" Fingerboard Radius. The '54 strat features a Vintage-style Butt Adjust Truss Rod with DiMarzio HS-2 (Only Top-Coil Active) Bridge Pickup, an Original '57/'62 Single-Coile Strat Middle, and Neck Pickup. 5-Position Blade: Position 1. Bridge Pickup Position 2. Bridge and Middle Pickup Position 3. Middle Pickup Position 4. Middle and Neck Pickup Position 5. Neck Pickup and SSS Pick Configuration.

The reason the bridge pickup in SC mode sounds different than a typical Strat pickup is because of the coil shape and that the lower than average Strat inductance places the resonance above the harsh 3-3.5kHz range with a typical 300~400pF cable capacitance. It also may have thinner than 42AWG wire, which reduces the Q (resonance peak) and increases the lower harmonic strength per note.

Really appealing warm hollow papery tone that Sassafras lends. Possibly the best sounding 50's style Strat I've yet heard, but do you really need a luthier to adjust your pickups?

The tone you guys are getting on position 4 is what Brian May from Queen gets. The famous out of phase screaming tone. Try to play the Bohemian Rhapsody solo.
