Although these are similar to the single-stock futures that traded from 2002 until recently, these ETFs have certain advantages over futures.
They can be traded like other ETFs.
A margin account is not required, so they can be traded in retirement accounts. These ETFs use leverage and some offer inverse positions that will allow you to profit from declines in the underlying stock.
However, like all exchange-traded products, especially those that use derivatives, these ETFs have much greater risks.
There is no diversification.
Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains.
Losses may be compounded, leading to greater losses than expected.
Because these securities use derivatives to achieve their investment results, these derivatives pose their own unique risks, including counterparty risk and liquidity risk, and there will be an imperfect correlation between these single-stock ETFs and their underlying assets.
A few things to note about these investments: they are designed to track only the DAILY movement of the underlying stock.
Over the longer term, performance may differ significantly from the underlying stock.
