Having tested both of these camcorders, I'd say the Sony does have noticeably better picture quality, better stabilization and the manual adjustment ring is better than the small dial on the Panasonic. But the Panasonic is smaller/lighter, has more features, more extensive manual controls, and IMO better autofocus (especially for macro shooting).

I've always been a big fan Panasonic Camcorders and Cameras, but the fact that their new 4K camcorders only record 4K video at 72Mbps (rather than 100Mbps that their Mirrorless cameras use) is enough to put me off. I've seen footage from the Sony AX53 and it looks excellent.

I'm waiting to see when Panasonic gonna deliver this camera model ( from the HC-V770 to the HC-WXF991 4K line ) with 1 inch sensor, since all the other models have been coming with 1” sensor but this line still remain with the small 1/2.3” sensor which deliver a lot of digital noise in low light.

I bought the Sony X53 a couple of months ago. Used it for about a month, then the electronic viewfinder dropped inside its enclosure/tunnel for no reason whatever. The camcorder felt cheap to begin with. It was under warranty so I had to send it back for repairs, no part available right now so Sony is issuing me a refund.
Image quality was good when not moving the camcorder much, but tracking and focus were a big problem for sports (Ice Hockey, Soccer, kids activities). Software/on screen menu is a bit of a mess, too many hoops to jumps trough when switching video modes. The LCD display is absolutely impossible to read under any sunny/day light conditions (and you cannot have LCD & Viewfinder on at the same time, it's either or, so LCD screen is basically useless outdoors in the summer).
My Sony refund check is going towards the Panasonic 991; hopefully it's a better product. TBD next week.

So me being kinda new to the camcorder world, and with the prices being the same. What would you recommend between the two as of right now?

My experience was about the same as stephan488 as well; it didn't break, but for the money, I wasn't impressed. It does horrible in low light situations, and worse, the auto focus is pretty slow, especially when zoomed in on something. And if it's a low light situation, it won't focus on anything!
Worse, in my opinion, is the camera gets pretty hot on its bottom and right side -- which happens to be where you hold the camera in your right hand. It's not enough to burn, but it gets pretty darn uncomfortable!
There are also other little annoyances; if you're outside, you can't see the LCD at all, and the viewfinder won't help you. You have to close the LCD to reactivate the viewfinder. You also have to use the LCD for pretty much everything except a few functions (like zooming), but I guess they're all the same that way now.
Also, don't expect the WiFi 'send to computer' function to work. It would be nice to send my videos to the computer wirelessly when I'm done, but it ain't gonna happen. It may do a few smaller files like photos, but it fails on anything larger. It's faster to just copy the files over while plugged in (usb) anyway.
I've ordered a Panasonic HC-WXF991K as a replacement, which I'm hoping will fare better, even if the stabilization isn't quite as good as the FDR-AX53.

Panasonic
f 1.8 - better in low light
Bit smaller and lighter.
Has Light\flash
No 120fps for slow mo. not too many people would use that.
sony looks to spec out on better lens, but will that really be noticeable in video quality etc.

QUESTION: I had the AX33 and returned it. Was great but had a filmy grey video and when you took day time photo still shots, you would have "white out" in the sky part of an image when the shaded areas of buildings became visible in the camera's view. Does anyone have any input on the AX 53 or the Panasonic on this "White Out" issue with still photos? Thanks!

The Sony is far too heavy for a handheld camcorder.
