the people who are upset are the ones that started the "Would you love me if i was a worm" trend

At walmart a box of worms has a slogan "our worms catch fish or die trying" it's savage and clever lol

Man, I'm biologist, and the concept of pain is always so difficult to measure/talk about. Yeah, they definitely don't like it, but they don't feel pain the same way we do. Fish do feel pain, how similar to the way we do I don't know, but it is different too. Even among humans we feel pais differently, but usually the more complex the organism, the more pain they likely feel.

Hey man, that's hypothetically someone's girlfriend.

Biologist here; they do feel pain. it's hard to determine if any pain is "felt like we feel it" even human to human. That said, you gotta do what you gotta do to fish and eat

Imagine the soul of the worm watching you released the fish he sacrificed his life for you to catch

"Would You Love Me If I Was A Worm?"

"Nah, I'd inflate you"

I think once you’ve got the worm on the hook the quality of its life isn’t exactly top priority

They feel pain, but only in the most basic sense, in the way that they know that they're injured and they're wired to avoid that at all costs for self-preservation

Unfortunately, recent research indicates that worms do indeed feel pain. They don’t have spines, but they do have a nerve cord that runs down their whole body. They have a nervous system, so they experience pain.

they’re the type of people who’d expect to be loved as a worm

Entomologist here. Worms do indeed have a pretty advanced nerve system, which 100% can feel pain (although it's not registered as a mental pain, rather a sign of body injury. Yet being placed on a hook is already agonizing for them, plus by inflating the worm it just ruptures his insides, which kinda shortens the pain (by rupturing the nerves as well, ending their lives almost instantly) compared to wiggling in water while being impaled on a hook, only to be eaten by a fish, sometimes not even fully eaten, only to bleed out underwater.

The almost instant death seems better then, because most predatory species dont have mercy, so it's better to finish their pain the quickest

Edit: after hearing worms can't drown, I realized their suffering is just prelongated, sometimes never coming to an end (no fish takes the bait)

So that doesn’t help ur case at all, just because something is different doesn’t mean it’s more or less valuable

Worms do have some kind of pain receptors, however they do not suffer as human beings. They don't feel the pain in same way like we do, but they indeed feel it and will try to move away from the thing that causes the damage. Hope it helps
EDIT!
: to clear some things because there seems to be a drama under that comment. I am not upset and crazy over it. I simply want to educate people so they won't think that worm can't react to pain just because its a worm without a spine ect. Once again, They DON'T react the same way as humans because they feel it differently and they main purpose is to keep itself alive, it recognizes threat, and eanta to move away from it, it's an instinct, ALL creatures have it so ita good to remember it. Even if creature is small and seems like nothing, it is still a living thing, live organism just different than human.
Ofc worms are good for fishing, but I'm pretty sure inflating them don't do much. I am not fishing expert though. I just wanted to talk about something I know of. Peace out ^-^ !

Worms absolutely feel pain. They have nerves and pain receptors like just about every other living thing. However, the thing that bothers me the most is how much more difficult their squirming makes it to get them on the hook. We are apex predators. It's not our job to worry about the feelings of the lesser organisms that we use for food. Beasts of burden and our working animals are a different story.
