My god that's messed up, 4 year old computer with a chip they still sell. One spill of coffee and the machine is economically impossible to repair. I would for sure say get the large battery if ypu do build out a full framework, mine dies in like 3 hours, although it has survived rain, drops and I've repasted the cpu with zero issues.

Oh wow! I've also been using the Steamdeck recently as a portable (and low power consuption) PC and I adore it. So does my girlfriend however so I rarely see it and feel bad taking it off her as it's gotten her into PC gaming. I've been weighing up another steamdeck, but also, the steamdeck doesn't hook up to an EGPU without doing some very silly mods and I can't upgrade the RAMwithout again doing some rather heavy modding to it, so I've been looking into a laptop with a great processor and thunderbolt4, then just noticed the frameowrk boards and had an eureka moment. So I'll be grabbing me one of them. Glad to see someone else literally have the idea first and test it out so I don't have to worry about how well it works. :D

It's been a long time since I have been in the Apple game, but have you considered running a Linux system over a live USB? I am not sure if this would be blocked as well since it intercepts the boot of MacOS. Then again I am not sure if there is a way nowadays to boot into USB without a keyboard shortcut. Way back when I was able to copy all files of a dead 2009 MacBook Pro to an external hard drive this way. Any way, best of luck!
