How to Identify Poisonous Jack O'Lantern Mushrooms! #mushrooms #foraging #education

Seeing a distant flash of bright orange amongst the greens of late summer / early fall can be exciting for those of us looking for chanterelles, but this mushroom offers no promise of a good meal. However, there are a few things that distinguish this fungus from our edible favorites.

Jack o’ Lantern mushrooms (Omphalotus illudens) have true gills that hang in neat rows under the cap and grow in clusters like oyster mushrooms from decaying wood and stumps, whereas chanterelles grow singly or in loose associations directly from the forest floor. While it looks like they are growing directly from the soil, they are actually growing on dead or decaying wood just below the surface. That’s why it’s important to consider all field marks when identifying mushrooms.

These Jacks were found next door to North Spore in Portland, Maine! 🎃

One way i check is by peeling them like string cheese. Chantelles peel easily like that.

Thank you for stating all mushrooms are safe to touch. I've always worried about that and it's been one of the fears I've had in learning to forage.

Are you telling me that I can have my glow in the dark fairy garden closer to reality?!

Step number one, if it grows in a huge cluster its probably not a cow.

When she said, “All mushrooms are safe to touch” I thought, is that true? What I found is yes it’s true! So wild that out of the thousands of different species, they’re all safe to hold!

The only one that people aren’t sure about touching is called Podostroma cornu-damae. Although its ability to harm you by touch is unconfirmed and believed to be a rumor.

Found a basketball sized patch of them on an old stump deep in the woods as a kid in upstate NY, but couldn’t find them again. Now I want to go find them again just to hang my hammock up for the night to see the lumens!

I'd be orders of magnitudes more pleased to find GLOWING MUSHROOMS, instead of edible mushrooms. 😎 💚💚💚

Jacks will always be growing on wood, never soil. The wood may be buried so be careful. Also Jacks have true gills while chanterelles do NOT.
