They also periodically move everything around so when you think you know where something is, it's not there anymore, then you have to do more walking around, hence buy more sh!t.

"Too Much Choice"
In high school I was in a class with the foreign exchange student from a country in the USSR (as it was then). She told us how she felt the first time she went into an Americal supermarket. After being bewildered by the size and confused by the bright packaging she walked a few aisles and began to cry. She said, "there were so many choices. How do you make a decision with so many choices?" I laughed at the thought then, but now when I see all those choices my experience tells me that there is no perfect choice, and I will sometimes say to myself, "I'll just try this one, and if I don't like it I'll try another next time." Then I randomly choose one, realizing there is probably some subconscious reason to my random choice, and be happy with it. But if you're not used to so many choices I can see how it can be so overwhelming that it can make someone cry.

After 20 years of retail management in the US, I can confirm pretty much all of this LOL..quick bit of additional info. Most prices are set at the actual cost of one physical unit. Meaning that the Store buys a case (12 units) of frozen veggies at the cost you buy one unit. They paid $1.50 for 12 bags of frozen green beans. You paid $1.50 for 1 bag of frozen green beans. 2 additionally sold units paid for transport of the goods and the cost of the workers, the other 9 bags sold are profit. This is true for just about all large retail chains. Some items used as "draw" items, are sold at a loss by the company and written off as a company expense each fiscal year. The retailer buys a 24 pack of Coca Cola from the manufacturer at a cost of $9 per pack and then sells to the consumer at a cost of $7 per pack. the lower cost is usually cheaper than their competitor to "draw" you in to the store. the $2 difference is then written off of taxes each year as a loss to the company or simply made up by the increased margin on everything else. There are whole retail conventions here in the US where the top retail chains gather and collaborate to iron out sales initiatives and share data analytics collected for the purpose (as noted in the video), of uniformly Standardizing shopping experiences. Preferred shelf heights of the average shopper, colors used in the store to calm ppl, design layouts to maximize sales is really quite exploitative. Well done Thoughty2, strong work.

As an introvert who wants to get out of the market as soon as it's only humanly possible i never have this problem. In fact ever since i can remembered i always used self service because i never purchased more than a few items per visit. Just get the thing i'm after and make a mad dash towards the cashiers.

I go to wegmans to get some pastries. There is a display. Avocados, jalapeños, cilantro, tomatoes, and corn chips. I start thinking tacos for dinner. I buy everything I need. I get home. Girlfriend is gone, left a note. "Went to wegmans to get a prescription". Texts me. Says she has an idea. Tacos for dinner

I wish he'd break down how tf these videos are made one day, the production is insane. This doesn't feel like youtube it feels like what the modern day History channel should be instead of...what it is lol.

I can honestly not believe how, everyday, we get these videos. I mean the time that goes into researching, writing, taping, and editing this type of video must be immense, and we get it almost every day. Fantastic channel!

We actually learned about the supermarket setup in social studies in school
We even had to visit a supermarket to inspect the buildup and found that everyone in the area was built the same

A way to not buy emotionally is to make a list while still at home and stick to it. I also go to a smaller supermarket where I can do all my shopping in about 20 minutes so I don't really get tired. Big supermarkets confuse me, too many people pushing, standing in my way and with all the covid deal I can't wait to get out so I often forget to buy what I need. Supermarkets try to trick us so we have to find ways to not get tricked.

Its why my parents would eat before they went, and made a list and stuck to it

Stay away from them “Wet Ass Peppers”. Omg. It took a half second for that one to hit but then I couldn’t stop laughing. 😂

I especially liked the fact about misting causing produce to spoil faster! I always wondered why I have to keep leaf lettuce in the drawer of the fridge to keep it safe and dry, but the supermarket has it all out; and so wet that I have to shake it off before I put it in the bag!

I wait until the store is almost closed go get exactly what I need, leaving the kids at home and using self check out. I absolutely avoid the grocery store at prime time ! It takes about 15 min once a week to get in and out.

So. It has been family tradition with us ladies to refuse a basket/trolley for shopping; we go in and strong arm our groceries until we can't see over our collection and store staff is concernedly following our challenge with baskets and trolleys we opted not to use in favour of using the muscles instead. :D

The point about there being too much selection is absolutely correct. I remember when I came back from a bad place overseas and went to Super Walmart, I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't decide what to buy and actually ended up leaving the first couple times I tried to shop.

Lets be honest it isn't hard to fool us in a supermarket when many of us get 'Carpark Dementia' as soon one sets foot outside!

🛒🚗😭🤣

One trick I didn’t hear you mention was the fact that stores are constantly changing which aisles and where on the aisle your regularly purchased items are located. They do this so that you have to slow down and look at everything rather than just jet thru the aisles grabbing the same old stuff. I feel so used!
