I developed a fissured tongue about a year ago. It doesn't bother me unless I eat spicy food, which I love. When the spiciness goes into the cracks, it burns and stays burning for a long time.

I brush my teeth everyday and I brush my tongue often. I just developed fissures within the last month. Now if I eat anything slightly spicy it's unbearable.

I have both a fissured tongue and geographical tongue, the dentist always said they weren't sure what caused it and I remember as a child my dentist at the time said it could possibly be because of a food allergy, and I didn't know what that meant at the time but looking back I do remember there was a very specific combination of food that would inflame my tongue and cause it to have a burning sensation and that is what would cause my tongue to burn and is ultimately what caused the scarring. It was a combination of McDonalds chicken nuggets and the Orange Hi-C drink and the package of salt that would always cause an intense burning of my tongue. I don't really eat McDonalds that much anymore but as a child I would eat it all the time and that combination is what caused it. I wonder if there was a reaction to the salt / msg and whatever dyes were in the orange Hi-C.
