So glad to see you added this character to your Unsung Heroes series; and an early addition as well! You are only one of a very few that have made the case for Denethor deserving a closer look before perceiving him as a villain of M.E. This was a great commentary on a mostly misunderstood character. Well done!

Well if you pay close attention in the movie his reaction when he realized his son was still alive right before he completely lights on fire shows it all the instant regret and happiness that his son was still alive.

Interesting theory. I liked what you said about how he wished his sons were swapped did not necessarily mean he hoped Faramir was dead.

denethor had an incredibly resistant mind & will to hold out for as long as he did while using the palantir, even stronger than saruman.

Maybe saying he wished they were swapped he was thinking of Faramir would have been more suited on the fools errand and Boromir would have been present to secure and fight for Gondor and would be a more favorable Steward when Denethor passes. Now he's stuck with Faramir as Steward, who he doesn't view as having what it takes to be the Steward of his beloved Gondor. It would be his failure to not leave Gondor safeguarded with the best option in his mind.

I really loved John Noble's performance, but felt like the film worked too hard to make Denethor a villain. If Jackson had taken a more nuanced approach to him, I think the film would have been better
