Vivo is definitely visually more appealing, but you got to admire the Leica's colour science

Xiaomi looks like the photo is in raw and goes well and easy with editing. Id prefer that for sure

The vivo looks stunning and near perfect compared to the xiaomi...but i still prefer the xiaomi over the vivo simply because the xiaomi images aren't clinically perfect, less digital, more filmic and hence have a certain character because of its imperfections...idk how to explain...its like an old dslr or film camera vs the latest sony mirrorless ..the sony is more clinical and sharp producing clinically pefect images while the old dslr/film camera having a moody character and an aesthetic vibe because of its flaws which to me makes a more stylised image... photography isnt all about sharpness or perfect dynamic range ...unless youre doing commercial work . ..its subjective...if youre looking for an artistic image...i feel xiaomi does better...

Kudos to vivo for an amazing device though! And like always amazing work Jermaine...love the work and all the effort you put into all these videos of your's!

The reason vivo's photos look sharper is that over-sharpening and ai algorithm filling, at the cost of serious distortion (if you have a real camera to compare it with), you can try this processing in any image editing software, but for photo post-processing, over-sharpening the original film is a complete disaster

I will say this I have Xiaomi 14U the photos are better than what is in the video but I don't like the colors of the X100 Ultra... for me Xiaomi 14U in certain photos it did better but I like Xiaomi more than Vivo
You can even see that the X100U at night the colors are saturated, while the Xiaomi ones are more natural

Great comparison with some stunning shots, man! I'm trying my hardest to resist the temptation of buying a Vivo X100 Ultra but these videos are not making it any easier for me haha. I'm currently with an Oppo Find X7 Ultra but that 200MP tele is so tempting!!

Damn I preferred pretty much every single photo on the Xiaomi, Vivo has that typical HDR look (plus not the fan of oversharpening, sharpening is not detail).

Jermaine this was such a great comparison man. I'd take the Xiaomi for the manual controls including the variable aperture but I'd take the Vivo overall. Two great phones fighting valiantly to capture our memories. We really can't lose these days. This has quickly become one of my favorite mobile photography channels.

Brilliant review

I try overcoming Xiaomi shortcomings with the following

1) Using GCam Mod ( GCam Apk software ) for darker situations to improve dynamic range and improving detail levels. The same applies to the extremely brightly lit situation / High dynamic range situations

2) I take most portrait shots in normal mode ( 3.2x, 5x )rather than dedicated portrait shots. I always reduce exposure levels by -0.7 to 1.0 EV. I have noticed that 35mm crop portraits in portrait mode is most reliable, as perhaps from the main sensor.

3) I use polariser / ND filter often to reduce glares and improve contrast, specially on flat shots of 3.2x, 5.0x

4) I use 50 MP mode for zoom shots where I need more details. Shooting in RAW with Leica High contrast Black and White filter improves post processing and dynamic range for 3.2 x and 5.0 x

5) The 3.2X / 75 mm lens is most acceptable for macroshots.

6) Video shooting with a DJI Gimbal is quite beneficial for videos. I prefer Dolby Vision output although limited to the main sensor. I guess shooting in log mode with post processing LUT application can give HDR. Adding a ND filter/ polariser helps here as well with contrast and reducing glares.


Finally a question:

Does 5x Zoom direct comparison on Vivo X 100 ultra feel a bit synthetic, rather than dedicated optical zoom on Xiaomi? The portrait shots looked more organic on Xiaomi although skin colours were too off. GCam Mod helps here as well, I think.

So yeah Xiaomi currently is a bit inconsistent and needs more tweaks. Vivo is the better point and shoot.

It would be absolutely phenomenal if you're able to talk about their galleries, built in photo editors, file sizes, and put their camera modes head to head, such as their full resolution mode. Side note....I wish Xiaomi released more software updates to improve this amazing phone camera they have made! I have seen Vivo and Oppo release updates with genuine care for their users.

So hard to choose one between these two. Prefer the contrasty cinematic look of Xiaomi. But also like what Vivo does with Portraits & Night time photos. In terms of display & speakers which one feels better to you?

Loving the detail pics with the Not sure in what instances a person uses 8k but I think it's unnecessary.

Hey, i dont want to sound harsh or anything but it could have been great if you could compare the color settings between themselves... for example Vibrant and Authentic in the 14ultra are quite different, where the vibrant could have more dinamic range because it doesnt want to keep that dark look as in authentic mode. YES i know, they are inconsistent with color accuracy e.g. day- authentic is more color accurate night- vibrant is more color accurate... anyhow I believe the vivo also has these color settings that could be interesting to look into. To be honest im quite amazed at the zoom capabilities of the xiaomi 14 ultra (ofc its just AI enhancing) i believe the vivo can surpass this due to higher resolution and usually a very good sharpening (see x100 pro.. this beats the 100 ultra in zoom levels. Odd.)
