Odessa prepares for Russian attacks | DW News

The Black Sea port city of Odessa is preparing for an offensive by Russian troops. Odessa's mayor says the Russian military could soon surround the city on three sides, effectively cutting it off from the rest of the country. Locals are volunteering to defend their hometown - and say they're ready to put up a fight.

Aussie here. I visited Odessa in 1990, in the late Soviet days. Had a meal with a local family, friends of a contact back here in Australia. Some of the talk astounded me: at one point civil war was mentioned. Civil war? Yes was the reply. Between Russia and Ukraine. Remember this was back in 1990! By then the language barrier (and vodka) was beginning to slow things down (in my head, at least) but that lunch-time conversation has never left me. I hope Odessa is spared from all this madness. And that their magnificent opera house survives intact too. God bless Ukraine.

Odesa would be a significant strategic goal for Putin to capture. it handles almost 70% of the countries imports and exports and is thus of significant economic importance to the Ukraine. It's capture would be a nasty blow to the defenders.
