Six years ago, Sebastian DeLeon was working as a camp counselor in Florida when he jumped into a pond for a swim. He was later taken to the hospital where it was discovered he contracted a brain-eating amoeba. DeLeon had to be put in a medically induced coma for a week. Fortunately, the hospital he was staying at had Impavido. It's the only medication that treats the fatal organism. Now, DeLeon is one of four people to survive the deadly infection.

The reporter himself's got balls to swim in a lake. Mad respect for both.

You’d think they’d give this medication to all large hospitals. Not in large supplies but just so that it’s there. Always wondered about this guy. Glad he’s still here with us.

I was in awe as it is but that SIX YEARS AGO was even more shocking because wow that's an entire journey. Good for him and everyone who helped him in his recovery, wishing them nothing but the best, this is scary.

I’m so glad he survived. I can’t even imagine what he had to go through! And he fact he’s one of the four people on the PLANET to survive this thing is just a miracle.

I contracted an amoeba in my eye a few years ago. Was absolutely blind in one eye and in excruciating pain for a little while until I finally got to the right doctor. The only medication for it I had to order from New Zealand!!!!

This is truly a miracle that he survived. His parents must have gotten him to the hospital at the very onset of symptoms whereas most people seem to wait a few days. My only question is why they were swimming in a pond in Florida in the first place….?!! 🐊🐊🐊

My niece was in a similar situation and got a brain surgery and lost 1/4 of her brain. She was a avid traveler and traveled through jungles and everywhere. Some unfortunate things can happen to anybody.

Usually people who survive life threatening situations say they’d do it again but not this guy! This man is smart, he used his brain and said NAH!

I would hate to have an Amoeba, I still make mistakes in talking so relearning how to talk would take me a LONG time.
Glad that he made it out alive. :D

Awesome that he was able to survive, but I would hate to see how much the medication costed if it was in shorts supply across multiple hospitals...
