Are 2.5' SATA SSDs OUTDATED? — ORICO Y-20 2TB

Are ordinary 2.5" SATA SSDs still relevant or are they a thing of the past when considering that M.2 SSDs are slowly, but surely taking over? 2.5" drives do indeed have their disadvantages, but also noteworthy, obvious perks, in my opinion.
Today I'm putting a relatively inexpensive model by the brand ORICO to the test. The exact model name is Y-20 and I'm taking a look at the 2TB version. Although this SSD comes in at capacities ranging from 128GB to all the way up to 4TB.
Sure, to some ORICO will be considered a no-name brand. To me and certainly a few others, however, it is a familiar brand that generally offers decent adapters and hubs at reasonable prices. It appears now they're also getting into SSDs. So I expect nothing less from today's Y-20 SSD, although I could be wrong.
We're definitely not just going to look at the performance data, speed, etc., but also at the drive's internals to determine which controller and components actually are being used and what their respective quality is.
Because it's far too easy to get ripped off when it comes to SSDs. I was a victim of that myself a few years ago when I bought the next best, renowned Crucial SSD without doing any research beforehand. So keep your eyes open before buying an SSD and always remain skeptical!

What are your thoughts on ordinary 2.5" SATA SSDs? 🤔
Are you still buying such drives or are you explicitly using M.2 nowadays? 😁😅

just ordered a 1tb one for 34 bucks definitely a steal since I only need a drive to store my games in

At some point, SATA SSD prices would drop so hard they virtually replace mechanical HDDs as the next 'slow' storage option. We are slowly but gradually seeing that happen. Just give it more time.

i still using 2.5 sata ssd because i have old pc, and useful for old laptops which doesn't have NVMe
the limitation of sata 6gb/s makes the performance so close to between competitors so sometimes i don't looking for ssd's speed, just get the better deal, quality and warranty

they still have uses for those that enjoy having multiple storage devices in their tower. Since M.2 slots are limited on entry level motherboards. I still use SATA SSD in my machines.

QLC means a quick pass.
WD Blue are still available and reasonably priced on eBay, a TLC.

Do you know nowaday motherboard, ASUS STRIX X870e-e gaming wifi has 5 nvme m.2 ssd slots, ASUS Z890-e gaming wifi has 7 nvme m.2 ssd slots ? The reason for sata ssd is for old gen motherboards that has less than 3 nvme m.2 ssd slots .

IMO, it depends on the use purpose. I had two nvme gen4 drives on my PC, which I used for windows, games and storage. A few days ago, I decided to buy a SSD sata drive to use it exclusively for windows and storage (partitioned). It worked flawlessly for what I wanted to. On top of not having another nvme slot on my mohterboard, the sata ssd was cheaper. Windows is still fast to boot and use, and now I have more storage space while freeing space for games in my faster nvme drives. As I'm not a content creator, the speed of a sata ssd is enough for a satisfying experience with windows and programs (internet browser, instant messenger, social media app, text editor, etc).

hey Nic, who are you doing? :)
personally, I switched all my systems to NVMe SSDs a long time ago, the only SATA SSDs I still use are in my NAS :)

The brand you use will have to build their repetition up but ssd are great

I just got decommissioned samsung 4TB server ssd for $80. Yes it's still sata, but hey $20/TB? I can't say no.

Plus for daily task, you'll hardly notice the speed difference between nvme and sata anyway. 😅

I will admit i havent watched the full video yet. However having used a sata m.2 adapter with 2 m.2 slots, which are btw available in 2.5 size format. I belive this is an interesting way to utilize ssds.
I think theoretically it would be possible to have a 2.5 inch adapter with 4 m.2 sata ssd slots. The only bit of problem with it is you eighter have to drag 4 sata data cables into it. Unless it utilizes some hardware raid, which ive heard isnt that good.
Atm i use an adapter, which fits 2 m.2 sata drives and 2 sata data cables.
You can also easily convert an x4 slot into a lot of sata ports. Which any ATX board will have a spare.
You can also convert an nvme slot into many sata ports with adapters. Tho this does not seem that useful since nvmes are speedy and useful for games.

Next time show a sustained write to show when it runs out ouf cache and craters in performance.

I still think SATA SSDs are good enough for most games. I just bought a 2TB SSD for just 52 dollars! It was so cheap I went ahead and bought it. Just to let you know it was on sale because of coupons. It's the Fanxiang S101 SSD. It's TLC with SLC cache. So far so good. I do have a PCIe 3.0 Nvme as a boot drive. And I'll use that on games that will benefit on NVME speeds but the rest of the games SATA SSDs are good enough.

Orico Y-20 2.5 may be the bottom of the barrel but it still beats a HDD by a country mile.

Is this better than the ADATA SU650 SSD?

They have a place (SSDs), IMO (like other storage/media) The interface may not be as fast, like Nvme

My Daily an AM4 set up (X570).

2X2TB Nvme (boot/apps/docs/some games) MP510. I have 1 slot left but would lose 2 Sata ports, unless I use a PCI-E addd in card.

2X4TB Sata - SSD -TLC 860 EVO (games).

1X8TB + 1X16TB Sata - HDD, storage and some games not often played, (EXOS)

8X8TB (back up + storage) Seagate Expansions USB3 (portable but lots of boxes).

I also have a DVD/RW.

Each have a place for my needs. Nmve for boot, faster access time and editing etc

SSDs (TLC) faster than HDD, better TBW (than QLC SSDs).

HDD, longer term mass storage, that access less and currently cheaper per GB/TB than SSDs/Nvme.

DVD/CD, as I still have some media and games on them.

DramLESS

Doesn't mean crap to the average folks the SSD is better than an HDD with games requiring you to install them in SSD's

These types of SSD's are a God send
CHEAP
Performs practically the same
ALL CHIPS are manufactured in Taiwan so Quality isn't an issue

And NEVER ever pit against SSD's with NVME
