In this video I give my blunt and up-front opinion on the future of graphic design. After almost 18 years of experience in this industry, I have seen a lot of change over the years. But I think there are far bigger changes coming for the world of graphic design, and they likely will be here sooner than. a lot of people think.

With the ever-increasing approach of artificial intelligence within the design world, we are seeing a shift in the way designers conduct themselves in workflows, with clients, and their final design solutions. But what does the future really hold for us, graphic designers? It's going to be an interesting future that's for sure..

In all honesty i have been a designer for over 20yrs and in that i have transitioned from hand design to computer to (now) AI assisted designs. I keep having to refresh my thinking in terms of psychology and basic trends, the whole social networking thing helps narrow much of what i do but still its like the tide its relevant today and then not tomorrow, while making sure i ignore the noise. AI will find a place but cannot replace human thought anytime soon as it is like the Ouroboros that uses what it has been given to make new while we (as humans) try and deviate and explore even more to come up with original ideas. In short as artists we learn to adapt because nothing in life ever stays in one place or the same.

the problem is, many people despise artists for some reason. So the artists probably wont get as much support in that matter as they should.

11 years this year as a graphic designer and I love how things have been made simpler over just a decade. In 2010 we had Adobe Flash and now Animate and now I can finally use Adobe products like Fresco on an iPad to create 2D animations and a comic book and comic strips. I am adapting to the changes and loving it because it was a dream to be where I am now a decade ago. I'm looking forward to what's coming next. I am grateful to be part of this important career and it's challenges. It's a blessing as well that I can still use my hands for traditional craft and design. To many more years in GD.🍻

I am a graphic designer but in the last 8 years i am doing a lot of video editing / motion and illustration. Cartoons, whiteboard animations etc all made by hand. What i can say.. i start to use A.I to speed up some things, like using some pre made effects, adding furniture in a 3d photo (just imagine doing this by hand) and to make some compositions using A.I + photoshop. I am loving the results but my concern is that as i live in brazil, people here always want the more cheap methods. Today i have a good job where i can do many things, so i do not cost that much for my boss. But in the future? I do not know...

Tbh my only concern is clients / agencies that try to cut corners and think that since AI can 'do my job' then they don't need to pay me as much, or just skip the designer all together. This comes from paying hourly wages, which now means if something takes me 1 hour instead of 5 hours then I get 5 times less money for the same job. I personally think hourly payments need to go, but some clients have hard time underdstanding that.

The biggest difference between AI and other technological advancements in the past, is that AI is a self learning and self doing tool. It’s designed to do what people do and do it better. It won’t just be graphic design that gets effected by it. Every thinking job on the planet will be effected at an exponential rate. Studying people and demographics will be automatic, as well as generating targeted personal ads and imagery for any user. Typography will be bunched into more specific caregorues and similar to how ai generation gives 4 image options to select from… that’s pretty much the extent of what people will be doing. Even the motion graphics and commercial market is effected already (though that’s the farthest behind). Ai is designed to get exponentially better at an astronomical rate, and now that the public has its hands on it, it’ll be everywhere. Though I do think there will still be an audience who is sick of ai and supports classic human design, tho it will be smaller and more related to artistic statement and personal brand, than related to business promotion and advertising. I give it 10 years max before 90% of design jobs in most companies are gone.

I totally agree. World will still need humans to make decisions and give sense to even most exotic Ai productions.

Like you I've see all these changes. I'm currently using AI (Regenrative Fill) to correct 17 images in a book I'm working on. This will save me hours. On a side note I noticed you showed Apple Vision glasses at the start of the video. When these become affordable I can see desktop computers (for me, my iMac) being phased out. Why would I need a physical device when I can have the equivalent in a virtual format in front of me and importantly with any size screen I want. This will open a whole new experience. Thanks for this video!

The way people who were left behind in the 40s and 50s as mentioned in the video is quite different from the change that is happening right now. Back then people who didn't adapt to digital forms of art might look like they were left behind but eventually, they got back in with the boom of social media where they regained their popularity for still being the same. Manual artists (like sculptors for instance here) might look like they were left behind but with the help of social media they have regained their audience by still being manual artists, but that is not the case here with AI.

I see a future for experienced designers and not for beginners or people who are just starting out. I see so many job openings asking for 2 or 3 years of experience for entry-level jobs and because of this the opportunity would make sense only for the experienced person over a beginner and it would keep revolving around them. And yeah now you may tell me to upskill myself but that doesn't work that way for a person with a lot of responsibilities on top of his/ her head. Even if a person would try and upskill themself it would still be too late to get in for a decent pay. This is exactly what I tell so many people AI might be a friend to the experienced person but it is purely a villain for everyone who is just starting out.

I've a suggestion for you to make a video about how to make an affective thumbnail and what principals of graphic design makes it most likely to be clickable
Thanks❤

Great vid Tom. I honestly see both sides of this, but personally, I think that like other advances in technology, AI is a TOOL, and it's about being able to adapt it to our current workflow. Whether people like it or not, it's not going to go away. I think the most important thing about it all right now is issues and hurdles when it comes to copyright; those are things that need to be adressed. Whether its implementing certain guidelines or restrictions, it needs to be clear what can and cannot be used. It's going to be interesting to see what happens in the next 5 years honestly. No matter how much it advances, like you said, I don't think Ai can replace the human aspect and art of psychology... At least not anytime soon.

I think people seem to forget that the insane software advancements that we're seeing now with AI are just baby steps. Imagine how advanced AI will be in just 2 years from now. 🤯

I'm pretty apprehensive about Adobe and it's AI endeavours. I think once they manage to marry AI with Indesign it'll be somewhat questionable if my careers worth it. A big part of my job is design in magazine layouts and other documents. Imagine when the user just clicks a button, pastes the text and AI creates an entire layout that they can edit and easily manipulate. Not saying that would be anytime soon, but it's almost guaranteed, canva already is nearly there. I enjoy AI and the time it saves me on certain projects but I'm ever so cautious (and starting my personal trainers qualification just in case lol)

I've been doing thus 20+ years, and things keep changing: Photoshop used to have one undo! Its all good. What has been apparent is that more design is needed than ever before. There's plenty to keep us busy, do not work for lowballing clients, Ai will replace them :)

Aside from the fact that AI will be able to do in less than 1 second what it takes a person 8 hours to do, AI doesn't need PTO, sick days, complain, whine, have ego or need a raise. This why AI will win.
