Disappearing the Truth | What The Death of Stalin is Really About (Film Analysis)

The Death of Stalin is one of the funniest political satires of modern cinema, but the underlying themes make the film special. In this analysis, I breakdown the political climate satirized by Armando Lannucci and how it's maintained by comfortable lies and enforced silence. We are often warned about politicians manipulating us with fear but rarely warned about politicians manipulating us with comfort. Friendly smiles mixed with comfortable lies can produce a lethal poison, a poison the ministers in The Death of Stalin know use to secure power.

It was an absolutely great movie I especially love the part where Khrushchev told beriya that he was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and then malenkov Responded with “we all are”

One thing about the people who tell you to "trust no one": they also cannot be trusted, especially when they're telling you that they're the exception because they give you a little bit of uncomfortable truth.

The death of Stalin is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It makes you feel in a way that no other movie has made me feel. 10/10

I think you missed an important part of this. Khrushev kept his promise and did protect her. He sent her away and protected her brother. Beria would have had her executed as soon he it was feasible to do so. The only reason he survived was because she was sent away and so was no longer a target for anyone. As you said, the only power she has was her name and the fact she was not in Russia, it couldnt be used by anyone to promote themselves and make her a target. This is a very big point. Also for me Beria was threatening her.

-Thought Id point this out, Leonid Breshnev is behind Kruschev on the left. Breshnev would later seize power similar to how Kruschev did.

Not only is this movie very close to historically accurate, but it’s fucking funny. Plus they even used different British accent to represent different soviet accents lpl

One thing I would like to add though: I would not necessarily call Chrustschow a despot. By dicator standarts he was very moderate. Despots are a very specific kind of single ruler type that has a specific feature of beeing unusually cruel to their enemies and their own (Stalin, literally). Chrustschow was more of a career dictator, a classic single ruler. He didnt rule through the military or through fear, he ruled through the state administration, the communist party. It is very telling that he didnt sentence any of his rival to death, instead he did something revolutionary for the soviet union: Send them to positions that are politically irrelevant instead. There were several attempts against him later on but he never shoot his opponents (except Beria who definitly deserved that). This would actually continue in the soviet union, so when Chrustschow himself was kicked out he simply retired and lifed out the rest of his life with a pension.
The soviet union post Stalin was far less of a despotic empire ruled by despotic dictators then before.

I saw the comedy in this movie, I wanted to laugh and I did a little bit (the portrayal of Zhukov for instance). But then I remember the stories my grandparents would tell of that time. And how my own family was marked as enemy of the state, and how my great grandfather was executed while my great grandmother and my grandfather were sent off to Siberia. So instead of laughing I silently shook my head with ever increasing levels of sobriety. Took me 2 attempts to finish the movie.

The movie is about the ludicrous nature of politics, especially in a brutal totalitarian regime (although politics in less dictatorial states can be just as cutthroat, which the director has pointed out before).

Regarding accuracy, it's not 100% accurate, obviously, but it's very authentic and even gets small bits right, such as Stalin being called "the Boss" and Khrushchev reciting jokes to his wife.

The Death of Stalin goes to show in almost poetic fashion what occurs in a regime that can dictate everything including reality itself and one in which can deperson people without a thought.

One of the greatest films ever made in my opinion. A timeless dark comedy. 10/10

This film was a complete surprise gem. I kept seeing it on Netflix and brushing it off and when I finally took the time to watch it I was awe struck with just how damn good it is. The castings were perfect and the timing of dark humor with dreadful suspense was expertly timed. Best 90 minutes spent on a movie in a while

Yeah that whole Jordan Peterson thing about zebras isn't true, he's taking an old hypothesis and running with it as a creative writing exercise, which he does a lot. The more contemporary scientific belief about why zebras have stripes has to do with the pattern being naturally repellant to blood sucking insects. The alternating white and black so close together creates a kind of dazzle effect that prevents these bugs from landing on zebras to feast off them.

Tigers don't hunt zebras. The travel costs would be ridiculous. Plus, they're reluctant to team up with lions.

Ive watched this movie so many times, it's great. Anytime Zkukov is on screen he just steals the show.

All i cared about this movie is Zhukov, Zhukov is, and will always be, a badass .

I don't care he fought for the USSR, he is an absolute chad and will remain so forever

4:40 he says that because it's a quotation by Lenin, and it's a powerful thing to say to citizens of the USSR, because when Lenin promised them bread, peace and land, they got those things. But the needs of the population in that moment weren't social rights, they already had them, but civil rights, and Kruschev will be the one who reforms the country in that sense

I thought the movie was way over rated but having said that I can't agree with Putin's objection that it makes Zhukov look bad. Hardly! Zhukov looks pretty damn good!!

This proves just how funny it can be to have Yes-Men taking over after their boss dies. As a Disney history reader, I can imagine some of these ministers asked “What would Stalin have done?”

All that really matters is that this movie was hilarious.
