What Happened To Phineas Gage?

This video is about a man Phineas Gage who had a metal rod pierce straight through his head. Even though what happened to him was sad, you would be surprised to know that most of what we know in the field of neuroscience and psychology today came from patients like Phineas Gage who either had some kind of brain disability or had an accident that damaged certain areas of their brain.

I used to love the astronomy contents on your channel around 6 years ago when i was still a kid. And now when youtube recommended your channel to me once again, I couldn't believe how far you've gone. Keep up the good work!

Interesting story. We learn in books about this case in the studies of Psychology here in Serbia.

You never gave his age at the time of the incident I don't think. But if he died 11 years later at 36, I'm guessing 24-25. This is of great importance to me because I have a single brother I grew up with nobody else around but our baby sister, who grew up pretty tough with 2 older brothers. My brother in his freshman year of college had a breakup with a girl he was really in love with. He literally crawled in his bed after that, and refused to come out for anything for a couple of months before my parents, not knowing what else to do, called the State Mental Hospitals that all disappeared around 2000, but werat their peak of helping people when this happened in 1987. They took 5 or 6 police officers to restrain him, since even though had lost a lot of weight, was working out every day before this. It took several years to find the right chemical to cure what the doctors described as a chemical imbalance. It was schizophrenia. So I've read a lot on the subject since. And your description of "he became a totally different person" is exactly how I've described my brother all these years. He's nothing like that kid I grew up with. And I found in my research on the subject, all severe mental illness doesn't first appear until 18-24. That age when our brains are in final development. Which would be a great deal of frontal lobe activity.
Absolutely fascinating story and my first for your channel. I normally won't subscribe to any channel with over 100k subscribers because the channel owners seem to change much like I've described here. But I noticed you still have a lot of interaction with your audience. Are ever so kind to the cruel bigots in the comments even. Very unlike what I normally see from someone with a large following. So I'm turning on my bell on a trial basis, certain you won't disappoint.

Great video! I am concerned about the use of people's bodies by scientists when there is no consent. I understand the importance, but we are human individuals and should be respected before and after death.

Why did the medical community adopt frontal lobotomies as a "cure" for violent tendencies? Or were frontal lobotomies just part of the scientific study using people that were incarcerated or in mental institutions.
