uncovering the truth of Sail GP

I decided to finally get to the bottom of the never ending ads on my Instagram feed and flew to San Francisco to watch giant catamarans race in the bay. Today we are talking about Sail GP Grand Final in San Francisco and all things grandstands, waterfront views, food, and bathrooms.

I have to make a racing playlist now don't I?

I could not care less about sailing, but as soon as Amanda talks about it I'm sat for the next half an hour

Amanda's ability to make me care about things I have zero interest in is truly amazing.

I’m a simple woman - I see a video from Swell about an event that I will likely never attend and I click.

How you may have gotten sunburnt even with a hat: if you're that close to the water, it reflects the sunlight back in your face even when it's overcast. I speak from experience xD

Swell Entertainment would actuslly be a crazy good name for a sailing related channel

The fact that they made it clear that disabeld people should use the premium line is already a great thing . In my experience there is often no dedicated area and employees don't always know where you should go if you have a disability where standing in line is dangerous to your health. I'm sure if the premuim line was too long for someone that they probably could have went in through that adrenaline lounge line if they briefly explained their issue.

Man I LOVED this video, Amanda! I actually race sailboats and love Sail GP!

As always, enjoyed your review and detail.

The thing that is insane to me is that these are considered "sailboats"...when they're more like...hydrofoil gliders. The engineering is AMAZING how they work and the speeds they can achieve.

Hydroplane races are pretty fun to watch. Smaller races have a county fair feel and then you get big events like SeaFair.
To add a little spice to this, the first small hydro race I saw, 1st and 2nd lapped 3rd twice, 2nd lost position due to serious engine troubles, and 4th never started and was slowly drifting towards the track for the whole race. Wild stuff.

Pro tip: if you are curious to see sailing, the Olympics (which start well, NOW) have a ton of different sailing events, from very small single person sails to full teams in bigger boats. And Olympics do take new viewers into account really well as a whole, as far as commentating goes, because that's the case for most viewers.

As someone with a similar complexion, living in Australia, I can tell you that you must likely got sunburned from reflection off the water.

As someone in their 20s who loves F1 and has sailed for 20 years, I would never go to a watch a sailing race/regatta (sailing race/tournament). NGL sailing is so fun to do but awful to watch! Except highlights and the starts!

Sailing starts are probably one of the most exciting parts because everyone in on an equal playing field and there's a countdown to the start for several minutes. You try to spend that time getting into position (while always having to move and avoid hitting or illegally blocking anyone else). You have to figure out which way you want to go and time everything perfectly which is hard when you have to keep moving. So there's a ton of work and strategy going into the start!

I like that this channel slowly becoming a racing channel. Can't wait for the coverage of the annual deaths at the Isle of Mann TT.

I love racing but I was not expecting a sail racing video. I would’ve expected those crazy (and rather dangerous) dragster speed boats before sail racing.

I learned about Sail GP when I heard Sebastian Vettel was either a supporter or partial owner of a Sail GP team. I love that it's easy to watch on youtube.

I know a bit about sailing because I'm in a rowing club for years and I can vouch they're the most "glamorous" of the water sports. The money you need to train and compete is so much you either need to be rich or get multiple big sponsorships. Makes sense they cater to the F1 fans, and probably tennis as well. It's probably the most gatekept sport for four year fans. I probably wouldn't be allowed to attend, even if I paid for the most expensive ticket, because I look like a cheapskate.
In comparison, rowing gets zero exposure, clubs are always on the red, and members constantly hold fundraisers to get kids to compete.

I really like nerd conventionss and stuff like that, but man, semi-obscure top level sporting events is just my absolute jam.
