My first dog would get his legs wet and would watch other dogs retrieving in a pond. It was obvious he wanted to. One day, he was walking in the water and stepped into a deep spot. He taught himself the rest.
I now have two 10-month-old pups. My pitty followed his doggy friends into the same pond and copied them. My big pup just gets his legs wet.
Older dogs are the best teachers. Monkey see, monkey do.

Suns out guns out. Great lesson. Thank you. My Akita learned to swim from running from home and crashing into the sea from a pier. Hunted ducks with my sister chasing after him and eventually she had to jump in with her clothes on to finally get him. Good times.

I rescued an abandoned and abused shepherd about a month ago. She is about 8 months old now.
She has fallen into our pool twice now and does not want anything to do with it. We want to teach her how to safely get to the steps if she falls in again. The first time she fell in, she was hanging on for her life on the edge and I saved her. I slowly guided her to the step but not sure she paid attention. She had panic written all over her face and was grateful I saved her. The second time was after it rained, she fell in again right in front of me. I guided her to the other step on the other side of the pool. Same thing, a panic look and was grateful. I bought a kiddie pool hoping she would get into it and she has no interest. Its just a huge water bowl for her. Lol.
So now when we let her out, we have to stay outside just in case she falls in.
The first exposure to a pool is so very important. Be careful with your dogs if you have a pool no matter their age. They get a bad taste and want nothing to do with the pool if it is not a good experience for them.

Great video and the puppy is just adorable! My husky just jumped into the water behind one of his dog friends one day last summer & swam like he had done it his whole life 😂 my older, heavier dog used to love water but hated swimming. Not sure how the new puppy will do but definitely will take your tips into the first session in the summer!

Thanks for the help on this! Just got a puppy and have a 4yr old dog who loves to swim! We like to paddleboard and swim in the lakes! Can’t wait for it to warm up a bit more.

Thank you Garret for this informative video. It has helped me to teach my terrified 8 month old Dobermann bitch how to swim and learn how to get out of the pool. I had to use my Son's pool, which does not have dog friendly steps like your pool steps. Living in SWF will allow me to continue her pool lessons. Thank you again as I could not have done this without your teaching video! Theresa

My puppy plays with the garden hose etc he’s not water scared but went to the beach just yesterday and the waves were too much for him to get wet, so I think I will go to my daughters house and teach him pool first like you showed here, thank you
