My master made a series of dvds and he gives one after each belt test for the appropriate next rank. I cannot stress enough how much that helps.

When I got back into Tae Kwon Do after a several-year hiatus (military service does have its drawback especially during wartime), I actually built a smartbook for Tae Kwon Do. I started with the basic WTF rank requirements for the white belt all the way to 3d Dahn (my medium-range goal). I then added material from the curriculum from my old school, skills I had learned from Filipino Kali, boxing, and military grappling. When I found my new school also had a Hapkido program, I added that as well. It's my go-to now for terms, forms, techniques, even Tae Kwon Do history and philosophy. This binder travels with me everywhere and constantly gets updated as I refine new/old ideas and learn new techniques.

Could you make a video comparing and contrasting different styles of karate? Or maybe a series of videos on each style you're proficient at, summarizing the main points of the style and how it's unique from other styles?

Great tips! I also find that a good aid in learning techniques or kata is to visualise yourself doing it perfectly, then go through the Kata in slow motion, thinking about all the points of each move, correct stance, correct breathing, when to include tension and in what part of the body. For instance if doing a reverse punch, ensure your out-breath finishes with the technique, that the twist of the fist is done at the end and for me, most importantly that when you tense at the end, only the muscles in your forearm tense up, the shoulders etc remaining relaxed and that immediately after completion you relax again ensuring you remain loose and fast! After a few repeats of the visualisation and slow-motion moves, gradually build up to full speed, I find the body remembers for you, using these methods!

Loved it, I already use a journal to write down kata step by step when I am first introduced to a new one. And it does help my dojo mates are constantly asking how I learn and retain so quickly. This video has opened my eyes to use that same method for the rest of the aspects in my karate, those subtle forgettable details. And a gopro is on my wish list lol. OSU! thank you!

All great suggestions. I was one of the first dudes I knew with a VHS camcorder in the early 90's. Three of my sifu were big on shooting video as a means of preserving techniques and sets.

Good points ! Yes I totally agree doing it over and over and if you can teach too it really reinforces your own knowledge of a move, technique, or application Bc you’ll do your studying to teach it correctly so then your student gets the how and why as you in turn again reinforce your training.

Oh, man! Your videos and everything you do is so great, but you know what is even better? seeing Sensei Oleg teaching you a kata! He's the best and I love him and all the Hayashi Ha instructors.
Come to Australia again, I'll be happy to attend your events!

That is some good info. My sensie was just saying to film my self to see what I'm doing wrong to correct my self. Compare videos from the first time I did the move to the improved one. So I can see how to correct it. Not everything is in the manual so that's good to keep extra notes. Reinforcing what you learn.

Writing in a journal, great advice because I am trying to remember a training video you did on kicks. It started at the wall, knee up to the left then the right and transition to 4 different kicks. I'll find it eventually!
