Airborne Wind Energy uses the forces in a smarter way allowing us to handle the same power with only a 10 % of the material of a similar sized wind turbine. The kite is reaching higher altitudes where the wind is stronger and more consistent.

Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) is a technology that can contribute to us achieving net zero in 2050. As IEA states, 30 % of the energy will need to come from technologies not yet commercial. AWE is highlighted by the IEA, United Nations, the European Union, The United States Energy department, and many more.

The video shows Kitemill's KM1 prototype in production. In these flights the main purpose is to increase autonomous endurance. The kite is also producing power averaging at 5,5 kW and peaking up to 20 kW. The wing load 7 000 N, which equals to the wings lifting a mass 715 kg. The take-off, and production is fully autonomous, the landing in the video is manually assisted. While average power is going to improve, these flights shows great progress in other factors like structural integrity and load control, automated take-off and good production retraction ratio.
