Red Beard, I've always placed a deep socket over the valve spring caps and tapped it with a hammer to remove the valve spring keepers. The keepers come right out and are kept from flying by the socket. Give it a try, it'll save you some time and will be a great tip for your other fans.

im glad you ended up replacing all of them. My father and I build racing engines and its just known by the builders that when you pull pistons out the rings will never completely seal as well as if you were to use new ones. Youll see more power with this engine compared to one that hasnt had the rings replaced. Alot more. 😁

Just a side note Everytime I mess with valves and or valve springs wen I put it back together I always smack em once or twice with a rubber mallet to make sure those keepers are seated right ..I'm sure u don't hafta do it but that's the way I was taught wen I was young
