Finally! The rare expert that acknowledges that an Altoids Tin kit is not really a survival kit! Obviously there are folks that will repeat "anything is better than nothing" but that's a half truth at best. A small tin can be handy to organize a few items but there's simply not space for much lifesaving gear. At a minimum I suppose a small tin with a mylar blanket bungeed to the outside would be at least useful to a degree. Some argue that a tin need not contain shelter but the means to build it. Even if that's true there's not much in a tiny tin that can help you build a shelter. The razor can cut the cordage I suppose but you won't be doing much wood work with it. And as you point out, the kit doesn't address water at all! After shelter and maybe fire it's the next most critical thing.

The ESEE tin was assembled by experts but seems to have been guided by the marketing dept to a good degree. I'd rather have a water bag than a few fishing hooks since I can live a month or two longer without food than I can without water.

My smallest PSKs are considerably larger than an Altoids tin! Liked the review a lot. While I don't have much regard for micro kits I'm oddly addicted to videos about them. ;-)

Nicely done, Jason! I really appreciate your honest review. After taking your courses, I prefer to build my own survival kits. (This is Jude, by the way) I am still wanting to get out there and do some filming with you! Hit me up on FB and let's get it scheduled.

I agree but this kit isn't meant to be a primary survival kit. Its more of a small backup pocket kit incase you get separated from your main kit.
It may help you get out of a bind or even save your life, so given its weight and size, its a no brainer to carry something like this (on your person) along with your main kit.

However, I like to make my own kits that are cheaper and better. But yeah this kit is basically worthless if you don't know how to use its contents.
