Autism stimming can be misunderstood and people might not know what types of autism stimming are out there. In this video, I show some autism stimming examples for people to understand what different types of autistic stimming look like.

*NOTE: This video shows very broad examples of stimming behaviors & this list is only a limited list of autistic stimming examples.

Stimming or self-stimulatory behaviour by definition can be a repetitive autism behaviour for autistic people to feel stimulated. Either because they are understimulated (hyposensitive) or overstimulated (hypersensitive). These autism stimming examples are very broad examples of stimming behaviours that an autistic person may exhibit. Stimming is not exclusive to autism as can be shown in other neurodiverse people as well as neurotypicals/non-autistics.

In this video, I show off different types of autism stimming in the 5 types of stimming: Auditory stimming, tactile stimming, visual stimming, olfactory stimming and vestibular stimming. But I have broken these down into individual autistic stimming examples such as hand flapping, rocking and more.

The 5 autism stim examples shown in this video:
Auditory stimming / verbal stimming - 0:33
Tactile stimming - 1:14
Visual stimming - 1:48
Olfactory stimming - 2:32
Vestibular stimming - 3:00

It’s so funny because I’ve always made “pterodactyl noises” throughout my life because they feel so good to make and I thought I was just a little strange, but now that I’m getting a diagnosis it makes even more sense 😂😂💖

I had no idea the noises I’m constantly trying to stop myself from making are just normal stimming...
And the random feeling that I need to move.

Constant pacing, all the time... helps me think.

Thank you, our son has both several stims, and once we understood what was a stim it was so much easier to cope with extremely loud high pitch stims, thanks for educating people like this

I also find myself repeating thing’s off TV. Mainly comedy thing’s and I use the phrase’s or funny remark’s in everyday conversation. And I am always playing with my hair, mainly when I’m nervous and I pull it out. And I love rocking backward’s and forward’s :) And I just love rocking out in general ;) haha 🤘🤘

I do all the vestibular stims! I didn't know walking on tippy toes was also a stim.

I constantly play with my hair and i do pretty much all of the tactile stimming you mentioned, especially stimming with certain objects cause i'm a sucker for texture (mainly soft things)

Alien 3 quote? Singing (auditory), finger drumming, feeling silk and twirling my pony tail hair (when I had any, about 20 years ago) (tactile). Nice to know which ones are stimming....all of them! :P Thanks again, I'm learning all the time

I have the variety pack! At least one from each catagory

It does seem like generic bored actions though, like humming or whistling, or drum beats on stuff.

My daughter likes twirling hair but not her own hair! Lol And she flaps her hands, interlocks and twists her fingers. I like bouncing my legs and rocking back and forth. 😊

Great video! I have less olfactory stims then the others. I have lots of vestibular whole body stims like rocking and pacing and hopping, lots of repeating words and phrases, lots of rapid eye movements and looking out of the corner of my eyes, and looking at colorful things and slowly things and sequined stuff. I also chew!

I decided to see what stimming looks like to see if some of my little movements could be those.. and you just described almost every mannerism I have 😅
(Not the one where I randomly just need to slap my own face when I'm alone but maybe that's not a stim 😅)

Hi, I greatly appreciate your videos as they help me learn more about my adult brother who has aspergers. Would you happen to know if providing sound effects to the movements of others is a form of stimming ? My brother dose this. Thx so much 💓

Wouldn't repeating song lyrics or movie lines be known as "Echolalia"?

I think I misunderstood the definition of stimming 😳 I thought playing songs with bass on a bass speaker and hugging it to hear and feel the bass was considered stimming but I guess not because how do you even classify that? 😓 But there are MANY of the mentioned stims that I do! 😲 Like walking on the balls of my feet, I had NO idea that was stimming! I've done echolalia stimming for YEARS now! It's kinda wild how I apparently stim throughout the day...

I didn't know that so many of the things I do were stims! All I knew of the stims I do was hitting the butts of my hands together
