It's truly that simple, all though I would also consider durability. I would excpect a 70 dollar fly reel to last longer than a 20 dollar reel. Also, when salt water fly fishing it's better to go with a corosion resistant one. But in general, simply put, I totally agree with you. I'd also rather get a more expensive line than reel. Any recommendations on a budget 12wt reel with good drag? (that will handle tarpon)

I’ve been using the same five $20-$30 reels going on 8 years without a problem. I have some expensive ones too and yes they’re smoother, but they’re not super amazing. I like hand lining fish off of the reel, so not much drag used..but good drags help with Big fish for sure. Fish On! Thanks as always MRO crew. Have a great weekend! 👍👌🎣

Too bad they quit making the Medalists. I would like to get one of those large diameter reel witha decent drag but $800 is well outside of my budget.
