Hello Steve [ Experience The Buzz Podcast ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.

About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.

Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):

" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

🤘

Yes, Floor Jansen does growl, not in every song with Nightwish...you would
have to look into her earlier band Revamp for more .
BTW this was in Wacken, Germany, with 82, 000 fans in the audience.

Metal isn't all about growling, you know - even though Floor does, when needed.

Classical, rock, metal, operatic, folk, growl, recitative. These are just some of the styles she is master of. And she's quite likely to display several of them within a single verse. And this song will do nicely as a show opener - just an appetiser for what is to come.

This is the Wacken Festival in Germany, 2013.
The entire concert is epic!

Glad you decided to react to this band, This is with their 3rd singer Floor Jansen, a 6’1” Dutch vocal beast who can sing straight Opera arias through to full on growls and screams(try Yours Is An Empty Hope from their Mexico gig)They’re definitely a band that are better live, their studio stuff is good but it’s their live performances where they shine…they go from operatic though to rock, folk, Celtic and on to thrash and everything in between, hope you decide to dip your toe into some more..if you do then definitely use Gabriel’s list as it has the best quality videos performance and audio wise.👍

Who needs growls when you have the beautiful songs of Nightwish and voice of Floor?

Wacken is most famous and most respected Heavy Metal Festival in whole world. And it is in Germany. Greets from Finland, home of Nightwish 🔥🤘❤️🇫🇮

Does she growl? Not on Thursdays, that's when she breaths :) She does growl in Nightwish, but not a lot. In Your's is an empty hope for example. And growling 10.0 during her time in Revamp

Greetings from the UK.
Symphonic metal is too narrow a description for Nightwish. Their diversity is their strength. So if you are looking for a heavy song with growls try “Yours Is An Empty Hope” live from Mexico City. BTW it will Floor doing the growling!
To see where they are today try “Noise” live from Hellfest 2022.
Thank you for a good honest reaction.

They still tour with this song so it’s not outdated or anything . 🤘

Are they still together? Yes! They are currently in the summer camp working on a new "more heavy" album.
For a second helping with newer material try their "Noise" music video.

The „Growling“ I hear now is more of a stomping… Nightwish Army approaching again….😂
I concur with that the whole Wacken 2013 set of Nightwish is worth to look. And Wembley 2015 and Helsinki 2005 and …

Thanks for your honest opinion. if growling is that important to you Nightwish is not for you. But she can growl. It's not in France but a fan traveled to Germany for this concert. Peace

Ah, my favorite band. They're definitely active though on a break for a while, working on the 10th album. Too bad it's not your cup of tea but I appreciate an honest reaction instead of an audience pleaser. Will definitively check out some more of your videos.

If you're still interested in looking a little bit deeper:

Nightwish has a lot of diversity in their songs, ranging from folk to ballads, to heavy metal and progressive rock. The keyboardist writes most of the music and he is also in sideprojects called Auri (Folky, soft, atmosperic music) and Darkwoods my bethroted (full on Black metal) which kind of speaks for his broad musical interest.

One cool song with Floor full-on growling is 'Yours is an empty hope', may be worth checking out... She also did an Iron maiden (The evil that men do) cover once with her old band which is not the best quality instrumentally, but her performance and vocal always delivers. Their male vocalist/bassist is also particularly worth checking out, for example with their Pink Floyd cover of High Hopes. He left the band a year or so ago though, unfortunately.
