A great white shark breached the surface of the water to grab a petrel bird in an explosive attack.

Benjamin Kessler was on a shark tour off Port Lincoln, Australia, on June 3rd when he witnessed the devastating attack on the bird.

Tuna tail bait was thrown to the ocean to lure the shark closer to the boat, but this also attracted some birds.

The four metre shark approached with hunger for more than just some bait and turned its attention to the petrel bird.

Some seabirds, like this albatross, don't secrete the oils that waterproofs their feathers, like other waterfowl do (think ducks). If they get wet, they sit in the water with their wings open, as seen in the video, until they are dry and they are able to take off again. That's likely why this bird dodged attacks but seemed unable to leave the water.

Imagine you successfully dodge a shark attack three times and still decide to stay in the water 🤷‍♂️

Birds: (eats fish)

The fish: *Okay, it’s my turn now.*

Look closely at 0:42

They are dragging a line with a float on it. A few feet beyond the float is a hunk of meat. These lines are used to attract sharks for tourists. I've been on one of these trips myself before.

They intentionally led the shark right to the bird. The bird was likely exhausted, as it doesn't show any sign of injury, and as such could not fly away.

The guides capitalized on this coincidence to get better shots for the patrons.

usually wild animals have a strong vigilance for danger.... I dont think this bird was playing with a full deck of cards

If my wife ever had a shriek-cackle like that lady I’d jump overboard next.

Surprised more people didn't notice them leading the shark into the bird.

The woman laughing like a seagull is trying to attract the other birds to form a coalition against the shark 😂

Looks like the crew were not going to leave until they made sure the shark got the bird. You can even see them pulling bait right in front of the bird..jacklegs.

They were dragging a piece of meat with a rope by the bird to get the shark to bite it... sick and twisted people.

Fun fact: the same thing happens off the coast of Hawaii but it involves tiger sharks & two species of albatross.

So you were dragging a piece of chum in the water in front of that bird to induce the shark to attack it 0:41. That is pretty sick of you.

Yeah, They (the charter boat crew) know EXACTLY how to pull off "this" Shark,
Bird predation !
I'm sure they perform it on every excursion.

These are some sick people. They baited that shark to kill the bird who couldn't fly. And then cheer about it. Wtf?

... that bird has zero survival instincts 😂

Those in the boat baited the bird just to see it get killed. People are sick.

0:42 Human using a piece of meat as a bait in front of the bird to lead the shark to it... Shame on these people.

I guess this bird became the chicken dinner of the sea

So they used a bait to keep the bird close to it and the shark obviously followed the bird. That's disgusting behavior from these people.
