How Canada’s single-use plastic ban will affect disability community

An Edmonton disabled activist who uses straws everyday raised alarms when she heard Canada announced a federal ban on single-use plastics. Sarah Chew finds out what kinds of straws will be banned and if the disability community needs to be concerned.

As far as the Canada Wide Plastic Straw Ban goes, there is an exception for bendable plastic straws for medical or accessibility reasons. According to the federal plan, you may need to jump through some hoops to get them, but they won't be 100% banned if you can prove you have a medical reason to get one or something. So it seems like they may be listening a little bit.

Disabled people have special needs, and need special tools, such as bendable straws in some cases. Don't support banning their tools just because you don't need them.

There’s so many bigger things to target here when it comes to the environment. This is so painful to watch. Absolutely brainless. Microplastics are in everything, there’s no going back. Why don’t you guys go after the big guys spewing chemicals into the air every day from their factories. You know the people who actually have the resources and money to work with you.

i think the banning of single use straws will have a positive environmental impact. their single use disposal affects nature. i do hope the federal government does work with "disability" groups to find a liveable solution.
